Sorry for not being online much lately. I bet you think I'm going to use WAT as my excuse like always. Well, not this time - this time I was to busy fangirling, to actually have time for anything else. Fangirling about what? Zipang of course ;)
No, I still didn't get bored with it :P
I got sister to watch the anime with me. She complained a lot at first (even more then with Yukikaze - the poor thing hates jets/ships/mecha, and I always make her watch such anime ;P), but I promised her, that I won't force her to see any more, if after the 7th episode she will still find it boring. When we finished watching those, she ran out of my room dancing and singing that she was free, but I can tell that it was just for show. She stopped painting her nails after the fourth one. Somewhere during the sixth one, her complaining ceased. She did like it, but she can't admit that she was wrong, and ask to watch the remaining episodes. Her pride doesn't let her.
Luckily I am a generous sister and I'll let her pretend. Today I bugged her again with my "ne, ne, let's watch ‘pang~ ne?" and it didn't took much to make her agree. Wai :D
Following the Zipang frenzy, I started downloading other stories by Kaiji Kawaguchi:
Chinmoku no Kantai / The Silent Service
Yay for submarine slash! And when I say submarine slash, I mean it literally *lol*
Downloading this one was a ba~ad idea. Of course there were no scanlations, so I got the raw version from WinNY. And because of that, now, apart from the 23 Zipang volumes, 200 pages each, I have additional 11 ChinKan (is it just me, or does this abbreviation sound suspiciously like "chinko" ;D) mega-volumes, 600 pages each to "translate". Remember when I wrote about the feeling of missing out on something only because you don't know the language? Now multiply it by 13200 and you might have an idea of what I'm going through right now x__X
I didn't expect to get so hooked up with this story. I wanted to browse it through just to understand what the j-fanartists are squeeing about (half of the Zipang fanart pages also have ChinKan sections…).
Well, now I do understand, that's for sure. Yamanaka x Kaieda OTP! *__*
The plot: The Japanese and Americans create a top secret nuclear submarine, Seabat. However on it's maiden cruise, Seabat's captain Kaieda Shirou changes the course, renames the boat ‘Yamato' and declares it to be an independent country. Diplomatic chaos ensues.
If ‘The Hunt for Red October' comes to your mind, raise your hand (hm, I suddenly felt a wicked urge to see that movie again…).
I like it how you can see how Kawaguchi's drawing style improved over the years. I've "read" the whole series one evening and haven't even noticed it. But then I wanted to check something in the first volume and - shock! This is the evolution Kaieda went through. And he was lucky, since he was supposed to be the pretty one from the start.
Though I admit I kind of liked his evil-koala-on-eucalyptus-high look from the early chapters. 'twas cute. His crazy eyebrow movement shall be missed v_v
I found out that there is a ChinKan anime. A 3 episode OAV, that was even subbed. Too bad I can't get those subbs anywhere and once again I rely on my dear WinNY…
Kokuhaku / Confession
Even though the chara design was ugly, I muchly enjoyed this one. Yay for paranoia in four walls and plot twists every two pages - whee~
It was a short, one volume story: Two friends get trapped in a blizzard, high in the mountains. Thinking they won't make it alive, one confesses that he killed a person. But then, the snow clears for a second and they find their way to a shelter.
The one who confessed doesn't look too happy about it. The one who listened to the confession starts to think too much…
The good news is - it is scanlated!
Tayiou no Mokushiroku / The Spirit of the Sun
The beginning of this one really cracked me up: It was another sunny day over the peaceful land of Japan. When suddenly a great earthquake occurred. Then mt. Fuji spontaneously decided to blow up. Then the whole Honshuu cracked in half and broke in two separate islands. And then, the Chinese and American troops moved in to ocupate one half each. Tjaa… someone has a vivid imagination… ;)
I'm afraid I can't tell much about this manga yet, since it's a longer story, and with all the disasters there wasn't much place to introduce the real plot in the first volume. I'll just wait and see.
PS. Hee, I managed to make an icon with Taki and it doesn't look scary~ As much as I adore the guy, I have to admit that he's no bishounen ^^;
