Warning: Do not approach with Flame

To those of you who know me in real life, this is very much a given, but as I occasionally make new friends on the web, I thought I'd cover my bases and reassure people: I have not, do not, and will never, ever support or idolize real, live (or dead) serial killers. In fact, I didn't really in Silence of the Lambs; in some ways Jame Gumb ("Buffalo Bill"), the serial killer and primary antagonist scared me more than Lecter because so much of his actions were based on real-life serial killers and were that much more believable.

To some of you who have not met me in real life and are still thinking I am being overly defensive of my belief system, understand that this whole post came about when I was reading up on the Hannibal movies on Wikipedia and followed the links to the real serial killers' entries. What I read there freaked me the hell out. I am frequently playful and sometimes wry and ironic, but I never mean any disrespect to the people who are kidnapped and murdered in real life nor support of the people who hurt them.

I suppose what makes Hannibal Lecter (and Dexter <3) likeable at all to me is that they are fictional characters (that helps) and there is evidence that they are not complete sociopaths, and the gestures of their compassion are very endearing.

I think we all know how to separate fact from fiction, which is why I feel like this post is unnecessary. But it's something I've been thinking about, and in the end, that's what LJ is for, right?
