Ow, my aching day.

So, yeah. Depending on how you look at it, I just went through a twelve-hour work day. Yu am not happy.
The first part was my usual job as a cog of fluctuating size in a very small advertising firm. Data entry, filing, loading trucks. Nothing new there.
Then I went to take care of a little nothing for my friend Trey. The hard drive on his boss's computer at the Chinese Martial Arts Academy had died, and they'd gotten a new one, but they needed me to put it in because they collectively knew very little about computers. And that's fine; their considerable expertise lies elsewhere. Like, in focusing chi and keeping healthy and pummeling your foes into unconsciousness.
So, I get there, thinking this'll be an easy thing. An hour, two at the most, I figure, and the $50 I'd been paid for it would be more than worth it.
I look at the computer, nod, open it up, take out the dead hard drive, put it aside, put in the new hard drive, hook it up. After a double check, I realise that the CD-Rom isn't hooked up, and I do that little thing, too. A breeze so far.
So, I hook it up to the monitor and mouse and keyboard they'd been loaned, start it up, set up the bios so it boots from the CDrom and such.
"So," I say to my friend, "All I need is the windows CD and we can get this done. Where is it?"
"Uhm," says Trey.
So, the next half hour is spent digging through the office to find a windows CD. Any windows CD. And we find everything BUT a windows CD.
So, Trey calls Jordan, a friend. Fifteen minutes and Jordan's there, bless her heart, with a Windows 98 UPGRADE cd. Which does me no good with nothing to upgrade, obviously.
But, she's sure there's a Windows CD at her home somewhere. So the expedition sets out, and I spend another half hour or so digging, this time with Jordan's enormous dog sniffing and jumping at me. And I find a windows 95 CD! Horribly scratched, but still!
So we head back, and I begin fiddling. Things don't fit. Screws refuse to come out, end up stripped, and we finally get them out with pliers. Hardware fails to be detected. And NOTHING COMES WITH DRIVERS. And that's just the big stuff. The little things, too numerous to count, are what really got to me. Like the lack of spare screws to hold the new hardware in with.
So, eventually I look up at the clock to see that it's nine o'clock. I curse, and spend more time trying to make it work, to little avail. Well, that's not true. The computer will function. It just won't function well, or up to what was intended.
I'll be working on it again later, because I said I'd do all that, and I try hard to do what I say. We went and got dinner (at ten), and then I came home, laden with a defunct hard drive, fifty lousy dollars, and one hell of a headache. And I say to myself, "Wow, I've been working or driving to or from work for over twelve straight hours."
...I think I'm gonna go sleep now. z.z
Tomorrow should be good, tho. Tomorrow's MC2. And free time to draw in. So, yeah. ^_
