Kyuu watched in abject horror as a tentacle reached out of the water and, with great precision and delicacy, plucked Kinta off the deck of the ship. There was no time to yell a warning, no time to do anything.
For a second or two, the tentacle held Kinta high in the air. Kinta took the moment to show the aquatic creature that he was a ten dan. The tentacle quickly withdrew into the water. Taking Kinta with it.
Kyuu numbly fell back on his memories as to how Class Q ended up here.

The invitation to the island retreat to solve a ten year old case sounded like something right up their alley. The hardest part of the case had been digging through all the junk in the attic, looking for the information they were sure would contain the information they needed to solve the case (which they were correct).
They had to wait a few days for the return ship. That is when they heard the story of the waters around the island. There was supposed to be a kraken that would go hunting on days there sun dogs appeared.
The classmates laughed at the tale and spent the rest of their free time running up and down the beach in bathing suits.
The day they left the island, a sun dogs were visible around the sun and they followed the sun up for the first hours of the day. Kazuma documented the duration. "I don't believe I have ever heard of them being visible for this length of time," he said, downloading photos of the sun dogs onto his computer and making an entry, documenting them.
The small crew of the ship shivered at the sight of the phenomena and made themselves scarce, leaving Class Q to their own devices. One of the sailors, just before ducking into the hull, stopped and told them, "You'll want to get off deck. It's a bad day to be out here."
The five friends looked at each other and shrugged or rolled their eyes, depending on their natures.
Megumi stretched out on a beach chair, to sunbathe a little more before the sun became too intense. Kyuu, Kinta, Kazuma, and Ryuu started up a board game which quickly devolved into a shouting match as Kinta's skills with the dice proved to give him far too much of an edge. After a brief tussle, the boys decided that poker might be more challenging for them.
It wasn't long before they started to notice splashing that was not consistent with the ship going through the water. After some arguing, Megumi decided to settle the matter and take a look herself. "If only to make you children shut up!" she snapped as she walked over to the side of the vessel to take a look.
She let out a brief shriek and disappeared over the side. A split second later, the boys lined the side of the boat, looking for Megumi. Kinta already removed his shirt, ready to dive in after her. But she was no where to be seen.
Kazuma turned to go inform the Captain that Megumi had fallen overboard when a tentacle reached up out of the water and very deliberately wrapped around Kazuma's neck. Kinta, Ryuu and Kyuu were too shocked to react when the tentacle pulled Kazuma over the side into the water.
They gaped at the water a moment. For a brief instant, they could see the kraken swimming near the surface, moving faster than any sea creature had a right to move.
Before they could move away from the edge, it was Kinta's turn.
Kyuu and Ryuu ran for the shelter of the ship's housing, when the ship jerked, causing them to lose their footing. Another jerk, a sharp crack, and the ship came to a listing standstill in the water.
The remaining teens forced themselves up and headed towards the bridge. But they stopped in their steps as tentacles, easily as long as football field reached up out of the water and around the ship, to cradle the vessel.
With a series of earsplitting cracks and groans, the ship was crushed in half. Kyuu was peripherally aware that the remaining people on the ship were yelling in terror.
He fell into the water, thrashing around, trying to stay afloat. Kyuu had only a moment's regret that he never learned to swim as he went under. The last sight he had was of Ryuu swimming towards him, life preserver in hand. And a tentacle heading right for his friend.
Panic filled his mind, as he tried to make it to the surface, to survive as Kyuu's lungs filled with water.

Search teams were dispatched within 24 hours of the disappearance of the ship Class Q was supposed to return on. It did not take long for them to locate flotsam and identify it as from the ship they were traveling on. Weeks were spent, trawling the area for the Class and the crew of the ship but no bodies were ever recovered.
