Just a bit shaken

Jan 01, 2008 02:21

I know the new year is supposed to come in with a bang but I could've done without the one that happened about twenty minutes ago.

Scratch the humorous opening.  I just had to put out a fire at about 2 am.  A small one but even a small one is not welcome on what amounts to the front porch.

I heard a very loud pop.  I thought it was fire cracker.  Past experiences have lead me to be paranoid (some set fire crackers off on our front step before) and I had to look out my window.  I could see a flickering coming from the area of the door and thought 'sparklers' but went downstairs to look.

It didn't take a genius to see that the flickering was due to a fire.  I ran to the kitchen, spent a moment of panic trying to decide between getting water and the fire extiguisher, grabbed the extinguisher and ran to the front door.

What was burning was part of a strand of Christmas lights that we have decorating the yard.  This particular strand eventually goes around the door.  It took me a moment to figure out how to use it because the pin was gone but once I figured it out, I quickly put the fire out.

It produced a lot of noxious smelling smoke that made me cough and has stunk up the house.  And I have a case of the shakes.  I need to calm down before going back to bed.

So much for getting a good night's sleep.
