"When you flirt, it feels very wholesome and innocent, so people sometimes assume you want to be friends. You're affectionate, but not in a seductive way. When you like someone, you usually get to know him/her as a friend first, and hope it'll eventually turn romantic. Sometimes it just seems easier to go along with the buddy-buddy thing than to actually ask someone out. When you do tell people how you feel, they tend to say things like, "What?! I had no idea you liked me." If you can't work up the nerve to confess your true feelings, at least you still get to spend time with this person as a friend... (We know, we know - that's just not as good.)"
