Sexism in Science Fiction

Oct 12, 2009 20:03

I found this post today, a thoroughly misogynist rant about how women and gays are destroying science fiction.

The War on Science Fiction and Marvin Minsky

reading, gender studies, writing, fishbowl, poetry, poke a bigot in the eye, cyberfunded creativity, science fiction

What?

Wait, what?

"The current generation of boys will not have this inspiration from science fiction, at least from science fiction on television and in movies."

Because as we all know, there are now NO men writing science fiction and NO male characters depicted in any science fiction anywhere! OH WAIT.

Wow. This has so been Sexism Is Alive! Week for me.

And of course only boys can make scientific and technological advancements. Admiral Hopper would be spinning in her grave.

And now you see why Heddy Lamarr pretty much disappeared for the last part of her life. She wanted a career in science, and in fact developed a torpedo tracking system during World War II, but was constantly blown off because "you're just a pretty face".

Excuse me, WHAT?

I... I don't think I can properly verbalize my feelings about this because it's left me just sitting here, with my jaw hanging open as I stare at my computer in shock.

Because really, WHAT?

That article pissed me off so I am glad you are kicking its ass. It has so much wrong with it that it's hard to know where to start. (The stupid, it is like kudzu.)

What's worse, Marvin Minsky doesn't have anything to do with this guy's ignorance. Minsky is a brilliant scientist and definitely pro- women in technology. Thanks to that headline, a lot of non-computer-science people who stumble upon the article will come away thinking "didn't I hear he had something to do with sexism?"

Thank you.

You could pick pretty much any sentence to start, I think. There is certainly plenty of kudzu left to mow.

>>Minsky is a brilliant scientist and definitely pro- women in technology.<<

Oh dear. Could you provide a reference to that, for folks to read as a counterpoint?
