These pictures were taken walking back toward the house.
My two-day-old tracks lead between the flowerbeds (left) and the Midwinter Grove (right).
Swirls in the snow cast blue shadows.
A dry stem rises out of the snow.
A long line of tiny tracks crosses the driveway, going over another trail of larger tracks.
Since these are walking tracks rather than hopping tracks, they likely belong to a
meadow vole instead of a mouse. They look pretty fresh, too, with the edges still fluffy and loose since the snow hasn't frozen in place, and fairly crisp given the respective size of the vole in relation to the snowflakes.
Dried seedheads of
columbine stick above the snow. This particular plant had very interesting seedheads whose tubes twisted apart to make little hand shapes. It also bloomed quite late in the year.
This cloudy picture, taken through my kitchen window, shows a
male downy woodpecker at the hopper feeder. Only the males have that red spot on the back of the head.
