Photos: House Yard

Today the sun came out. The snow is no longer fresh, but now it sparkles, and shadows cast the texture into clear relief. It's a good day for photographing signs of wildlife activity. :D These are from the house yard and along the south side of the house. (See also Midwinter Grove, Savanna, and Back Toward the House.)

Sun shines over the snow looking east across the house yard.  The bare trees cast blue shadows over the white blanket.

Today is a much better day for spotting wildlife signs. Here a sparrow landed, turned sideways, then took off leaving those three feather marks in the snow. I've always been good at reading signs, some things just stick in memory.

Under the feeders, many bird tracks overlap, mostly from sparrows. They hop, so their footprints appear side-by-side.

Icicles at the corner of the roof had a near-constant stream of water droplets running off the ends. I caught a drop of water in midair.

Here is a closer view of the icicles with more water droplets falling off.

This row of icicles hangs along the south side of the house. In the past I've seen them reach the ground, although that rarely happens nowadays.

A few sprigs of grass poke up through the sparkling snow.

Under the fly-through feeder, a distinct wing mark shows where a sparrow took flight.

A mourning dove roosts in the south hedge. Birds love this part of the yard. There are always sparrows and cardinals around, sometimes mourning doves or other birds.

The garden shed looks much more cheerful today, standing out bright red against the snow.
