Photos: Savanna and Prairie Garden

May 06, 2024 00:18

These photos are mostly from the savanna and prairie garden.

This weedy wildflower is growing in the savanna.

It attracts tiny native bees.

This is the wildflower garden.  That tall purple thing is penstemon.

This white wildflower is starting to bloom.  I have no idea what it is, but the ants are loving it.

Yellow coreopsis and orange blanket flower have just been planted.  These are prairie wildflowers.

This is the path into the prairie garden.

Straight ahead, last year's path is now knee-deep in white Dutch clover. It's not native, but wildlife loves it.  I'm not trying to grow a perfect, historic praire -- just a patch of tall grass and wildflowers that birds and insects will love.  I plant native clovers too, but they're not always as enthusiastic.

This year's path is currently a brown meander. I need to sow grass seed there.

The sunchokes are about hip-high now.

The flower gardens are mostly out of bloom now.

Black iris buds are almost ready to open.

A couple of tulip buds haven't opened yet.  Given the wrinkled edges, these are probably parrot tulips.

The goddess garden is easier to see now that it's been mowed around.  I bought some moss rose to plant here, but haven't had time to put it out yet.
