Darrow Poems 12-17-23
the wind mutters and
rambles around the eaves
trying to remember what
it was going to say
* * *
in a corner by the woodpile
the cats have tied themselves
in a knot to keep warm
* * *
the fallen leaves,
wet with winter rain,
fade from red to brown
* * *
the fire snaps and crackles
in the hearth, its breath
sweet with cherry and pine
* * *
walnut wood, brown
as a summer tan,
pours forth heat in winter
* * *
frost on the windows,
becoming the cobwebs
of wintertime
* * *
pouring beeswax for candles,
sunlight turned liquid,
and then solid
and someday, light again
