These are the vocabulary notes for "
The Labored Works of Man Overthrown."
Vocabulary
dim years -- times when volcanic ash blocks enough sunlight to cause many crops to fail over one or more growing seasons. This inspires people to favor foods that require less or no sunlight to produce and things that store well.
fumelands -- areas in Europe covered by layers of volcanic debris, under which the hot ground still emits noxious gases, boiling water, and hot mud. Little or nothing grows there. Much of the Land of Fire and Ice (Iceland), Italy, Greece, and the Burning Waste (Turkey) are fumelands.
quakelands -- areas in which earthquakes happen often enough to prohibit many types of building. These areas have few or no structures over 1-2 stories tall. Even maintaining low buildings requires constant observation and regular maintenance to find and repair cracks before the whole structure collapses. Much of southern and central Europe, along with parts of Spain, are quakelands.
