Life Depends on a Free Lunch
This equation is the key to life. It's a really cool bit of biochemistry. Why couldn't we have had this in school? It's just so cool.
Let’s try again to restate the equation ∆G = ∆H - T∆S in plain English: The change in the amount of energy available to do useful work (∆G) equals the change in heat (a form of energy transfer) of a chemical reaction (∆H) minus some ridiculous “tax” that the Universe charges (T∆S).
You know the saying "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" ...? It turns out, without the free lunch, life could not exist. Life exists by harnessing free energy from spontaneous reactions to enable non-spontaneous actions that require energy.
