We actually have someone in our family who mixes sodas from scratch. I brought Buddha's hand syrup to play with at Thanksgiving. Getting the strength right is tricky, but it's quite good with a bit of lime.
Buddha's hand has a wonderful bittersharp quality balanced against the sugar, once you get the proportions right. (Any homemade soda is too sweet or too bland if you don't.) Add a little lime or lemon juice to bring up the citrus notes.
I wasn't fond of the plain lime, much too sour for me. But it is often good mixed with other flavors.
Blood orange soda is awesome. One of these days I may try candying some orange peels and see if comes out better than the last time I tried candying slices.

I don't know. I think ours is just made in a travel pitcher.

One of these days I'd like to try one of the soda makers just to see if they are as good as they claim.
