This is the freebie for today's fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
janetmiles about
high-end log homes. In case you're not familiar with it,
a hennin is a princess hat.
Log-Cabin Castles
This princess doesn't dream
of pink satin dresses and silk-veiled hennins.
She doesn't want to feed unicorns
beneath pennant-draped parapets.
She is not waiting for a knight in shining armor
to come and save the day.
This princess dreams
of blue jeans and plaid flannel shirts.
She wants to feed squirrels and deer
from the deck of a log-cabin castle.
She is waiting for someone
who loves taking long walks in the woods.
This princess thinks of canoeing home at twilight,
golden windows gleaming above blue lakewater.
She fantasizes about thick red-gold beams
holding up a house as strong as a forest.
She wants to shoot something more substantial than the moon,
cover her floors with fur rugs, and use antlers in all her decorating.
This princess flips through glossy magazines,
licks her fingertips and does not mind the ink upon them.
She calculates the equations of load-bearing walls,
compares cedar to slate roofing.
She meets with architects instead of elves
and bargains fiercely with them.
Someday, she will pull her log-cabin castle
out of the enchanted forest into being.
