Her Infinite Faces
She is Lilith,
the first woman,
made equal with man,
made from the dust of the Earth
and the living breath of God,
who knows the hidden Name
and will never lie beneath anyone.
She is Eve,
the good wife,
the good mother,
who is also
the first temptress
and the first scholar
whom not even God
could keep from knowledge.
She is Hagia Sophia,
the Holy Spirit,
that inward wind of wisdom
that whispers words of advice
down the slim thread of the soul
into the body's listening shell.
Look down, look down --
beyond the mist into myth,
down into the cthonic coils,
and you will see
them joined at the root.
Look down, look down --
and you will see
that she is Goddess,
Empress of the Great Below
even as God is
Emperor of the Great Above.
Look down, look down --
she is waiting
in all her many guises
for her children
to lift off her masks
and gaze on her infinite faces.
