Poem: "Thorns of Light, Roses of Fire"

Aug 12, 2012 16:44

This poem came from the August 7, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from ravan and ankewehner.  It has been selected in an audience poll for general funding.  This is a science fiction retelling of the classic fairytale "Sleeping Beauty."

Well, yes. The collateral damage in fairytales can run pretty high. But then, look at the crummy examples that even the "good" characters have to go on. It's hard to figure out how to behave like a decent person when you don't have a role model for what that should look like, and all you've got is a pile of jerkwads you have labeled "Not Like This."

It doesn't go much better in science fiction. AIs always seem to get raised by people who shouldn't be entrusted with so much as a guppy. But at least this one got to rescue the captive princess.

This is true!
I really like this poem. If Tanith Lee's Silver ever spoke poetry in public this is the sort he'd speak.

Yeah, I've made a point of going around it a few times, but it takes extra effort. You'd think the poor little blighters were cursed or something.

*melt* He's one of my favorites.

Good point!

captive princess.<<

And, perhaps, to be charming after all.

He does seem to have figured out what a woman wants: her own way. That's charming.

I'm happy to hear that. I enjoy retelling fairytales in a different direction.
