There has been a shooting at a Sikh temple, likely a hate crime.  This closely follows the Batman shooting in Colorado.  We live in a society that condones a lot of violent ideas.  There are thriller movies and militaristic toys and tough-talking politicians.  It should not be surprising that people surrounded by violent ideas come to think of ( Read more... )

When I help out a stranger, and they ask about paying me back, I say to pay it forward - help someone else when they can. That way you don't end up in the owing and resentment cycle that "Christian Charity" brings. Instead, it's just hospitality, and can be paid forward when you can.

This article from Scientific American has a bit to say about the possible evolutionary reasons why humans behave badly. To sum up: social inequality leads to aggressive behavior, and aggressive behavior leads to social inequality. Get rid of the habitual aggressors and provide deep nurturing (of an appropriate nature) to those who are highly stressed before they become habitual aggressors, and the whole nature of primate society changes.

Really, it helps to think of humans as being a mix between chimpanzees and gorillas. We are primates, after all, and our behavior will echo other primate species much more than we like to think it does.

If only humans were more like bonobos, responding to stress with affection instead of aggression. Funny how they don't kill each other.
