This poem is from the May 1, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from Dreamwidth user jjhunter.  It has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette.

I thought I was doing so well to remember that you hosted your poetry fish bowls around the first of the month and I logged onto Live Journal to signal boost and I was a day late and a dollar short -- sorry! I'll try to do better next month...

The Poetry Fishbowl is usually the first Tuesday of the month, unless something goes wrong or I need to reschedule for some reason. The next two upcoming sessions are listed on the landing page.

While I'm not currently open for prompts, this IS still a good time to boost the signal!

1) The linkback perk poem, " Signs Along the Way," isn't complete yet; you can open new verses by linking to the unsold poetry list or particular poems you like.

2) There's money in the general fund and we made the $300 goal for a half-price sale in one series. So there will be polls going up shortly, and everyone is eligible to vote in those.

No, you can't eat cake for breakfast.

Not even carrot cake? What about coffee cake? :-)

I once asked my Dad why it was okay to have pancakes with fruit topping for breakfast, but not fruit pie for breakfast. He got a funny look on his face and changed his mind about that rule.

Seriously, though, I like this poem. Sometimes parents (or older siblings) have to make unpopular decisions in the long-term best interests of the child (or younger sibling), and have to deal with the "I hate you, you're ruining my life" tantrums. Sometimes, though, the younger person comes around, and that's a good thing.

I was fairly easy to take care of in some ways. I never had much of a sweet tooth. I have more of a savory tooth. I preferred cheese sandwiches with mayonaise to sugary treats, usually. I do like sweets, and chocolates, but they're rare treats for me. I don't often buy them. When I do eat junk food, it's corn chips or potato chips.

Body chemistry affects what kind of treats people prefer. Some go for sweet, others for savory or salty foods. I like sweet desserts, but some things are too sweet for me, like most frosting. In summer, I like salty snacks. There are some fats I really like, such as butter or bacon fat. So it varies.

I really like the last line and how it relates to the theme of your Fishbowl.

It seemed like a good way to reinforce the connection. I was also pleased to get a few poems that weren't explicitly speculative fiction. The theme lent itself well to speculative poems but they didn't all have to go that way.

Also this is a good one for scrapbooking, if people want something for Mother's Day or baby showers or the like.

As a mom, I'll agree wholeheartedly with all of those except for the one about cake. I shamelessly admit that my 4 year old has had cake for breakfast. Granted, it was the morning after his birthday, but still....

That seems to be the point of debate. It's generally advisable to eat a healthy breakfast. But an occasional slice of cake in the morning is unlikely to do any harm.
