Poem: "Time for Snow"

Mar 01, 2011 21:31

This is today's freebie poem.  Arriving via email were two photo prompts from poeticknowledge.  I decided to put them together.  The result is "Time for Snow," in which Doctor Who arrives near Knoxville, Tennessee and quickly discovers that all is not as it should be.

Time for Snow

When the blue police box materialized
and the grinding, whining noise had stopped,
The Doctor announced, "We have arrived!
We should be somewhere in the woods
just outside of Knoxville, Tennessee."

His Companion poked her head outdoors
and said, "It's snowing."
"Clearly something is wrong here,"
said The Doctor.

"What are those?" asked his Companion,
pointing overhead at the flashes
of pink and blue and green light.
"Aha!" said The Doctor.  "Aurora Sylphs!
They come from a timeline where
fairies became the dominant species.
Their wings give off that light, and
their ambient magic causes snowstorms."

By the time they had
tracked down all the fairies,
tucked them into magic-proof cages,
induced the snow to melt before it killed everything,
gotten arrested, escaped from jail,
recaptured all of the Aurora Sylphs
mistakenly released by animal-rights activists,
made their way back to the TARDIS
and set coordinates for the proper timestream,
they were both exhausted.

Less than an hour later,
The Doctor dragged himself from sleep
to answer the insistent rapping on his door.
"Whazzit?" he mumbled.

"I'm sorry, Doctor, but it's snowing in the TARDIS,"
said his Companion from under three layers of wool.

"Well, bugger," said The Doctor,
"We'll never  find all the blighters in here!"
