This poem came from the November 2, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from wyld_dandelyon, janetmiles, ladyqkat, and aldersprig.  It was sponsored by janetmiles.

To Build a Door

To build a door is to define a space,
dividing here from there
by creating a threshold between
and a barrier to seal the breach.

To build a door is to declare a boundary
and demand respect for its sanctity,
an implicit statement of privacy and protection.

To build a door is to invite the possibility
of a doorkeeper to guard the passage,
a lock to fasten the door to its frame ...
a key to open the lock.

To build a door is to call into consideration
the meaning of "open" and "closed,"
the hope that when one door closes,
another door will swing open --
or a window will breathe through fluttering curtains.

To build a door is to become
both the kept and the keeper,
the treasure and the thief,
the adventurer and the journey

for the path goes ever onward from the door where it begins.
