This poem came out of the September 7-8 2010 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from siege and funded out of general donations. It explores the challenges of nutritional needs for alien, engineered, or reincarnated individuals for whom a straightforward diet might not be enough.

Where things get really interesting, of course, is when two members of the same body have different and conflicting dietary requirements. Fayanora Ahnabahn's people are herbivores. Negarahn and Pi are carnivores. There was a huge, prolonged battle over the issue of meat. Finally, we figured out the body needs meat too, so Fayanora just basically ignores the meat eating.

Possibly as a result of Fayanora Ahnabahn's being an herbivore (and her people being capable of eating wood), I often get the urge for something really hard to chew. Certain breads are tough enough to satisfy that urge.

Oddly, Pi also likes chewy stuff. But he prefers jerky for that.
