This poem came out of the July 6, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from the_vulture and siege.  It was sponsored by the_vulture.  Note that "Passing Time" takes place in the same future as another poem from this fishbowl, " The Given Now."

This is lovely. Especially the "because we can" at the end.

Reminds me of a song by vixyish that's quite popular in the filk community. The song's name is No Hurry. The chorus starts with:

No hurry, no hurry now
Watch the sky for a moment or two
No hurry, no hurry now
Take your time when it's all you can do

Thanks for posting the poem!

I'm honored to be compared to vixyish! Thanks for sharing "No Hurry" -- it's beautiful.

I'm intrigued by this odd little branch of the future I've discovered -- one where technology was not smashed, but sorted thoughtfully and some of it set aside.

Ya know, this poem really makes me think about that article on Amish technology that you posted links to way, way back. Sometimes, especially after a hard day of tech support, I can't help but think they've got the right idea. :)

There is much about their life I admire and envy. Other aspects, not so much. But they definitely play into my desire for a strong community, which I do not have. It's a key reason why I'm into intentional community and networking. Maybe someday it will come together for me ( ... )

I hear you on being a person of two worlds: I do tech support on cel phones, but I've also studied bits and pieces on how to make pottery and tools using stone age technology. I do so really want to learn how to knap flint. :)

There are two main styles of flint knapping, pressure and percussion. You can hit the rock with something else, or basically scrape off bits of it. In my current body, I don't really have the hand strength to be good at it, but I admire the craft and I know enough to be marginally useful.
