I will continue to Stand for a Bright and Pink Future
At Santa Ignacia, Tarlac
Last May 9th, the Philippines held its national elections. We had 10 Presidentiables and 9 Vice-Presidentiables. Since last year, I have been rooting for Vice President Leni Robredo to run for President since I saw her efforts throughout her vice-presidency for 6 years. She had several programs for the pandemic. On the contrary, the Duterte administration failed to give us progress. VP Leni was always the one on the move to help people in need. I was just tuning in for news on Twitter, and everytime that there was a calamity, we could see that VP Leni was constantly in action on the ground helping people. I chose her as my President since we can see that SHE DOES THE WORK FOR THE PEOPLE.
Due to the prevalent fake news campaign on Facebook, Tiktok, and YouTube, VP Leni was often portrayed as someone who was an “airhead.” That is, of course, false. VP Leni is a lawyer, often helping people in need even before she became a politician. Before becoming a lawyer, she finished her BA in Economics at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1986. She furthered her studies by taking up law at the University of Nueva Caceres in 1992.
As a graduate of International Studies, I am ashamed of myself for not standing up and using my voice as early as I turned 18. I didn’t immediately register as a voter. So, this was, in fact, my very first time voting. What brought me to this decision was that I finally woke up due to the cruel suffering we experienced under the Duterte Administration. I often heard sad news such as the extra-judicial killings, sexist remarks from our President, failed pandemic response, and our vast debt. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
As soon as the voter registrations opened again in 2019, I finally registered. I also transferred my registration here in Tarlac when we moved homes. I want my voice to finally be heard.
When VP Leni finally decided to run for President, several of my friends from the J-POP fandom invited me to a project called Kibou for PH, a community of J-POP and JDrama fans who support VP Leni. We had several campaigns online for VP Leni. I am so glad that I’m in the right crowd. So many J-Pop fans, too, joined the people’s rallies armed with their fandom penlights and uchiwa (fans with the faces of their idols)!
Kimi wa Cinderella Girl, my precious one, you are the only FLOWERING HEROINE 🌸🎵🎶

March 23, 2022 Unfortunately, not all J-Pop fans, of course, shared the same views as VP Leni supporters. I was utterly disappointed to read some posts on my Facebook feed a few weeks ago. Some are apolitical. Some do not care about the elections since, according to them, the Philippines will stay the same no matter who is running the country. But, to counter that, if we don’t act now, when should we work to make a much better change? While some of my friends thought this election was just a fight of political colors. This was, in fact, a fight between the Philippines versus another Marcos regime again, historical revisionism, and disinformation. I also can’t believe that some still believe in the Duterte Administration after all we’ve been through. I was so disappointed with these people that I decided to cut them off. I’m sorry, but I had to. It’s problematic that we don’t share the same morals and values.
When I learned that VP Leni would visit our place last March, I immediately made a banner for her. I am a huge J-POP fan, so I made a placard related to my fandom. I was glad that she was able to read it! Her speech also inspired me. I also saw that she was very close and kind to people she may encounter. She was there to smile at everyone and even hug each of us if she could. She listens to ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE FROM ALL DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE.
To be honest, I only experienced this “Bayanihan spirit” now. People from all walks of life came to VP Leni and Senator Kiko as one. I couldn’t imagine that we were only 14 Million. I refuse to believe that we’re only 14 Million. Imagine the vast crowds that they could gather in one venue? People were being so kind to one another and giving food to each other, even returning things that were lost, such as cellphones and wallets. You could still get them back. After the event, people clean and throw their trash. Imagine if we could do these things on a nationwide scale? That’s a very bright and promising Philippines for all of us.
When the election results came on the evening of May 9th, numerous tweets of disappointment flooded Twitter. I aired my utmost disappointment too online. I even thought of leaving the Philippines and just work abroad if Marcos took place. I couldn’t believe the initial results. Imagine the no. of people VP Leni and Senator Kiko gathered throughout their campaigns in comparison to the “hakot” of the other camp? I still, until now, refuse to believe that we had a decent election. There was indeed some dirty magic that transpired behind the scene.
Moving forward, VP Leni has already announced that she will continue to work for the Philippines, carrying her projects as “Angat Buhay.” I will return to Metro Manila soon, and I plan to volunteer. We will not move on from this. But, instead, WE WILL MOVE FORWARD CARRYING WITH US THIS PINK MOVEMENT.
Thank you so much for reading. I am proud that I stood up for my beloved country Philippines and I stood up to the right side of history.
