Muses: Jung Yunho jungyundol and Im Siwan rivexdroite
Rating: G
Location: Thailand, the Beach
Summary: Elementary, my dear... clam.

So this must be what a cake felt like, Siwan thought as he lay stretched out upon a chaise lounge on the beach come Saturday afternoon. The constant press of heat at his back was heavy, almost tangible. He was baking like a cake, waiting to reach the perfect shade of golden brown before it could come out of the oven and be eaten. The comparison tickled him. Fortunately there were no hungry predators in sight - besides, he was more gamey Raven than fluffy cake. He nearly laughed aloud at the sheer stupidity of his train of thought. Ah vacation, how glorious and carefree.

Reaching for his mp3 player, which was safely tucked away from the sun's rays, Siwan flipped through songs and picked a new one, adjusting his headphones - one earbud in, the other out. To listen for predators, perhaps. Soon enough he was humming along to it quietly, eyes lidded as he lay on his stomach, arms lax overhead. The waves broke against the shore, again and again, a soothing rush and lull.

The mp3 player that Fei had gotten Yunho for his birthday was coming in very handy for the early morning jog with Junsu. They had separated ways, but Yunho wanted to linger alone on the beach, not yet ready to go inside. He could do with a shower after so much exercise, but the light breeze in the air against his damp skin was pleasant, and he was loathe to leave it so early. Coming along a set of chaise lounge chairs set out along the beach, he narrowed his eyes and peered ahead, trying to make out the figure sprawled out across one of them. It appeared others were already up and enjoying the sun. As he got nearer, he was finally able to make him out. Ah, Siwan. The vanished villa-mate.

Yunho shut off his mp3 player, carefully, and tucked it back inside the pockets to his long shorts. "Hello," he said, tone soft so as not to startle, but hopefully audible to catch Siwan's notice.

Siwan blinked and peered over his arm at the approaching figure. When the greeting hit his ears and his eyes adjusted to the sun's glare, he put two and two together and offered a bright smile. "Hi!" he greeted the Raven in kind, and lifted one hand in a little wave. "Come to work on a tan?" the elder laughed lightly. His own, after four days in the tropical sun, was reaching the point of burnished perfection - this might be his last day of loafing about under the pretense of tanning, in fact, before he started to turn rotisserie red. He plucked the headphone from his ear and pushed up on his arms - he was due to turn onto his back soon anyway. Smoothing a hand up along his opposite arm, he felt the heat of the sun in his skin and was pleased. It would be so tragic to return to frigid temperatures.

However, there was still half a week to go and thus in the spirit of holiday, he waved Yunho towards the chair just beside his - he was, after all, the one person from Villa 2 whom he was familiar with beyond simple acquaintanceship.

Yunho took the cue and dropped himself into the seat beside Siwan's, stretching one leg out. The other he left bent at the knee, hand resting atop the joint as he turned his face up towards the sky. It was warmer now that he was sitting still in one place and he closed his eyes for a brief moment to soak in the sun. He was not so interested in tanning, but understood why there so many others lazing about in this manner. "It's very comfortable out here. Is this where you've been keeping yourself, hyung?" he asked, lids raising again as he turned a smile on Siwan.

"Yes," Siwan grinned, raking a hand through his fringe before letting it flop back into place. He turned over and deposited himself face up on the chair, stretching his arms overhead. "Mostly laying on the beach, eating, drinking, and sleeping." Siwan laughed. "I blame the OWLs for this lazy spell." A sunny smile on his face, he turned his head to look at Yunho. "It's good running into you here," he said, pleased that the division of houses - funny how that followed them around in one form or another - hadn't prevented a run-in with his one friend from Villa 2. "Are you enjoying the trip so far?" he asked as he stretched out his limbs like a sunning cat.

"A well-earned break," Yunho agreed, at the mention of OWLs. His own fifth year was just about to begin, but he was looking forward to the challenge he expected from his classes, rather than dreading the exams at the end of the year. It was best to go into his fifth year excited, as this... this year was going to determine the course of his future. Or something like that. He was well aware he took quite a few many things too seriously in one moment, before perspective reminded him that the future was really quite unpredictable. Yonsei, after all, had not been what he had expected.

But that line of thought was distracting. He reigned it in just in time to hear Siwan's question. The response was a nod. Inclined towards the spirit of adventure and exploration, he was already finding a great deal of different ways to keep himself entertained. There were his books, of course, and the inviting beach and sun. But there were things indoors, as well, that had caught his interest. "I took apart a.... a monitor, yesterday."

Siwan turned his head towards Yunho. "A...monitor?" he asked, brows inching upward with curiosity. "A computer monitor? Or like a...television monitor?" With the way muggle technology was these days, there was no telling. "Was it broken?" he further inquired, wondering what led to this deconstruction exercise. He stretched his arms up towards the sun, palms up, seemingly inspecting the back of his hands at arm's length, or perhaps trying to block out the sun behind his palms. He squinted one eye whilst doing so.

Yunho laughed and shook his head. "No, it wasn't broken. I was just curious about how it worked." Taking it apart had revealed quite a bit. But putting it back together was proving a bit more challenging. He would get it, though. He had written notes, kept a mental map. Surely those two together would sort it all out in the end. In the meantime, there were still things he was curious about, questions to ask Junsu. Not that he was sure Junsu could give him the answers. Even Muggles didn't seem to have as much knowledge of their own technology. "Don't you get curious enough about something that you feel like you need to look inside it to understand?"

"Ohh," Siwan said, lips forming a perfect 'o'. "I see~" he rolled his head to the side, looking at Yunho from under long fringe. "I do, sometimes. Mostly people, though." Eyes curved to crescents as he smiled. "But I try not to take them apart to see inside," he laughed, and dropped his arms to his sides.

Yunho laughed a little at the mental image that brought. Of course he knew that people did sometimes take other people apart, to understand the workings inside. "But there are ways to draw what's inside of people out, too. Who have you been trying to see inside these days, Siwan-sshi?"

"Ahh, there are so many interesting people~" Siwan lilted, eyes narrowed with a squint as he looked up at the sky, lashes like paint strokes over smooth cheekbones. "I'm like most of us, really. The clam that's closed the tightest is the one that intrigues me most. But I'm not trying - I'm learning well by just observing that one. Mm~ and there are others, too," he laughed. "I sound like a mad potionsmaster now, don't I~"

There was something they had in common. Not that Yunho put much effort himself, into trying to dissect other people. But those that were difficult to read were the ones he wanted to understand the best. His thoughts wandered only briefly to those two subjects that were interesting him recently, before he realized Siwan had admitted there was a one he was focusing on. How interesting.

"No. You sound like a watchful Eagle," Yunho replied with a soft smile.

"Hah! I like that much better," Siwan grinned, glancing over at Yunho. "Ah, I still forget that Ravenclaw is an eagle, and not a raven. Ravens are smart, too, so it's easy to forget." He took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly, contentedly. "And you~ do you only like to see inside inanimate muggle contraptions, or people, too?" he laughed, eyes curved with a smile as he watched the younger Raven. "I think our Slytherins are most clam-like, wouldn't you agree? I wonder if under all that rock-hard exterior there's some pearl worth uncovering." And not always was the pearl a soft underbelly, but some other oddity, quirk, or curiosity, he thought to himself. His appreciation of people, especially those difficult types, was an odd thing in itself, and thus he rarely every spoke of it.

"Most are not so cold as they would like others to believe." Yunho kept his eyes closed, face turned upwards towards the sun, soaking in its warmth. There was a warmth to people, too, that did not always display itself so openly. Ironically, it seemed rarer to find that jewel that shined brightly, unabashed, like Donghae, than those diamonds in the rough. This was true not only for Slytherins, of course, but Siwan had a point - it seemed those sorted into that house were more inclined to hide it than others. "Is it a Slytherin that you've been observing?" Yunho asked.

"I am an equal opportunity observer, you know~" Siwan sing-songed with a grin, coyly evading the question. "There is at least one in each house who has made me curious. Though, no one in our own," he laughed. "I wonder why that is."

"Is that so." Not a real question. Just a stall, and Yunho knew this. He delivered the prescribed words appropriate during this type of situation, but did not kid either of them with the lilt he should have added to them. Rather, he took the moment it took the utter the words to collect his thoughts. The next question, a real one. "Changmin-sshi is rather closed off. You don't find an interest in him?"

Siwan's eyes popped open and he blinked at Yunho with round eyes. "Ya!" he reached an arm out and smacked halfheartedly at Yunho's leg. "I said I like closed off clams, not incorrigible and rude sea urchins!" Siwan laughed aloud, tickled.

Sigh. "Changmin is difficult. I would like to see him be genuinely happy, sometime," Siwan sobered. "I don't dislike him, but his problem isn't other people disliking him. I think he just dislikes everyone else." A frown knit Siwan's brow. "I wonder what his parents did to him to make him such a jerk." He had an intense, if somewhat faraway look of focus on his face, staring off at the horizon. "People aren't just born that way."

It did not hurt, but Yunho's leg reacted all the same, pulling away even as he laughed. It was a rather apt comparison of Changmin Siwan had given. Incorrigible sea urchin indeed. And Yunho would have liked to know why, as well.

He knew next to nothing of Changmin's family, aside from their brief conversation before the Winter Holiday. From what he had heard then, perhaps it was a simple matter of having been spoiled. Yet there were others he knew who led a privileged life that were not as disagreeable as Changmin seemed all the time.

"Maybe something happened that's made him think the world is against him. And his own line of defense is to disapprove of others before he can feel the effects of being disapproved of?" The theory had no grounds. Yunho was musing aloud. It was nice to be able to do that with somebody, as there were so many thoughts he did not often get the chance to voice aside from to Typhoon, the hippogriffs, and the trees.

"Yes..." Siwan hummed thoughtfully; it did sound like a possibility. "It's too bad, really," he echoed, quieter. He felt bad even thinking about it, extrapolating on the possibilities that might've led someone to become that way. "Hnn. What a depressing topic we've uncovered," he moaned with a pout, and rolled over onto his stomach. "I feel like a cloud's just come out and covered up the sun." Faceplanting in the chair - which was fortunately covered by a towel - he sulked briefly before perking up, struck by a curious thought. "...What happened with that random Slytherin they put in Villa 2? Is she a friend of yours?" Siwan had spotted her just briefly upon his arrival, and she'd looked every inch the odd man out.

"Do you know Jinri?" Yunho asked, wondering how he had known she was even a Slytherin. But she did stand out at school, if only for looks and height alone. "She's... my music teacher." Friend. A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He would have liked to use the term to describe her, but it was unlikely it would suit her so well.

"Oh, no I don't, I've just seen her sitting at the Slytherin table at meals." A quiet diner, Siwan tended to people watch in the Great Hall. It was a fantastic forum for observation. "Music teacher, huh~" he lilted, drawing it out, eyes sparkling - one might blame the sun. "Is that so." Siwan lifted his head, propping up on his elbows. "She's the one teaching you Vivaldi, then? Keeping you up all night practicing~"

"Nights are a good time for us," Yunho replied coolly. He was not so oblivious as to miss the implications, intentional or not. But he would ignore them, because to do otherwise would simply be rude. "It might still be a secret, though, so don't tell anyone, will you?"

"Ahh, of course, it is none of my business," Siwan waved a hand dismissively. "I have no one to tell anyway. Though-- I do respect her choice in music. You may pass that along if it doesn't destroy the secret," he smiled. "I play piano as well, and violin. And that piece in particular on both. That's what I miss this week~ the piano." His gaze dropped to follow a fly walking a zigzag through the terry loops of his towel. He blew at it and it buzzed off. "I was given a most helpful suggestion to yodel if I missed music so much," he chuckled. "Some clams have such a great sense of humor~"

A clue. A part of Yunho's mind latched onto it. The rest of it decided to pursue more polite conversation. "How often do you play?" he asked. There were more interesting things about Siwan than whoever he was currently trying to dissect. A week without his piano and he was already missing it... Yunho often only played once a week at all. "There are other forms of music. I think I've seen you with an mp3 player." Useful Muggle device. Good for distractions and focus all at the same time. He was making good use of the one Fei had given him.

"Every day, unless I am really, really busy." Siwan said with a nod. "I studied piano, violin, and dance full time for years - it's still more familiar to me than anything else." He smiled, pleased that someone else around here knew what an mp3 player even was. "Yeah, I have one," he waved the earbud strung around his neck. "I use it to practice dance, or just to listen to music... but it's entirely different than playing it."

"The difference between taking it in and producing it, then," Yunho said with a faint nod. He could understand that, at least in regards to a few things. Music he still appreciated much more from the standpoint of an audience member. But sport and competition... For those things he preferred doing rather than watching. "Do you compose, then?"

The elder Raven nodded. "I try to, but it really requires long stretches of uninterrupted time at the piano. Some people can notate a composition from their head - I mean, I can do that as well, but half the joy is playing it, so I prefer to do it right there at the instrument. Playing music is something you do with your body, not only your brain." A bare shoulder lifted in a shrug. "I have one piece in particular that I'm working on - that I'd like to get back to," he said with a smile. "Piano took a backseat during OWLs, unfortunately."

"Maybe when you head back, at the end of this week. What are your plans for the rest of the holiday?"

"Ah, for sure I will then," Siwan smiled. "I will be home in France. I have no plans in particular, perhaps to meet with old friends. Drink some good wine, eat some good food." He shrugged. "Live the good life, for a few short weeks before it starts all over again. How about you?"

It was a surprisingly difficult question to answer, but he had none to give. "I'm not sure. I'm waiting to see where I'm needed." Or 'wanted' would have been more correct. "I'll have some time at home, though. I might see what else I can find in our library."

Siwan tilted his head. "Needed? It sounds like a job~" he said. "Like a doctor on call." He tapped a fingertip to the center of his lips. "...Your library?" he asked, twigging. "You have your own library?"

"I'm nothing like a doctor on call," Yunho replied with an easy smile. What would he have compared himself to? Nothing too dramatic. Ah, the library. His grin turned a bit embarrassed. "Uh, yeah. Big house."

"Damn," Siwan laughed. "And I thought my family was loaded." They were, in fact, but in a rather different way. "Are you looking for something in particular in that library of yours?"

"Sometimes I do, but sometimes I just like to explore. Since Yonsei, I haven't been around there as much." He was getting behind on his reading. Not that Yonsei didn't offer a wide selection of books itself. The library there was full of secrets, as well. "Recently I've been reading Muggle literature, though, so I doubt I'd find anything like that at home."

"Oh? Fiction or non-fiction?" Siwan asked. "I've not read much lately besides textbooks," he admitted ruefully.

"Sherlock Holmes. One Piece." He was switching back and forth between the both of them with whatever time he had to read.

"Oh!" Siwan recognized the name. "I've seen the movie, never read the books. Do you recommend it?"

Yunho's eyes widened. "There are movies?" He was not sure if Donghae had mentioned this to him. He wanted to go. This would definitely have to be arranged when they got back to school. He was determined to see at least one movie before the year was up.

Siwan sat up suddenly. "Yes! With Jude Law! There are two, actually." Perhaps wizards didn't know about Jude Law. Perhaps Koreans didn't. Perhaps they needed to learn, quickly-- "I can pull it up on my laptop and we can watch it sometime," he offered with a bright smile.

"You can watch movies on your laptop?"

Siwan's eyes widened. "Yes."

"I had no idea." Obviously.

"You don't say," Siwan teased, grinning. "Well," he said determinedly as he stretched out on his back, "you'll have to see for yourself. It's pretty awesome. Maybe when we're back at school." It would make for a nice evening amidst the drudgery. Here, though, with crystal waters and beaches and beautiful people to mingle with, there were better things to do than stare at a computer screen.

"Maybe." School was the only place he kept a laptop, in any case. He would need to look into "googling" or whatever it was that Hiro had told him about, where Muggles stored all their information.
