[A man-- burly, dark haired, shirtless, hairy and lightly scarred with tiny brown wings flapping excitedly at his back-- can be seen holding what can only be his journal out in front of him. He is wide-eyed with curiosity and more than a little confusion ( Read more... )

...Mister Bush?

[Aaand Kennedy probably did the worst thing possible just now. He and Horatio had been befuddled by the journals, but Bush? Bush would be lost. So never mind. He closes the journal, having caught a glimpse of the man's location, grabs a clean shirt, and heads out toward the fountain to collect him.

This will be fun to explain.]

[Here is a rather belabored voice:] It is indeed, and I would be most thankful for a clue as to where the nearest port is, Mr...?

[By this point, Kennedy has become rather careless as to the fact that he's supposed to be dead. So he shows up at the fountain with a shirt and a certain hesitation the moment he realizes that Bush is probably going to wonder why he's not dead.]

Lieutenant Bush.

[William Bush does not, actually, fall backwards into the fountain. It's a near thing, though. His eyes are as big as bell wheels, and his mouth hangs open for a split second, before he remembers to close it. He looks to the wings at Archie's back, at his own.]

F-figures.

[He gestures with the shirt.]

You're not dead, by the by. It's important to know that, here. [Then he offers the shirt.]

[William will take the shirt, dead or no. Wouldn't like to show up in front of Saint Peter half dressed. Not that he's proper dressed without a waistcoat, but this will have to do for now.]

...Not dead? Kennedy, Mr Kennedy... nothing else makes sense.

[A pause.]

You're right. You're right, nothing else makes sense. Not where we're from, at any rate. We'll explain in a moment. For now, let's get you home.

[Because duh, Bush is clearly going to stay with him and Horatio.]

You could say I was drunk, or dreaming. I'd take a lie, Kennedy. [William is just keeping himself from poking Kennedy in the chest and exclaiming loudly. It just seems like it'd be rude. Stiff upper lip-- let's just pretend he's not talking to a dead man.]

[...Terrible luck, this is.] You've got a home, in bloody Heaven? [Obviously they're in Heaven; Kennedy's here. In any case, wherever they are, William does what he was born and raised and trained to do: he follows.]

We're not in Heaven. We're not in Hell, and we're not in Purgatory. This isn't any kind of an afterlife. [House 36 is not at all far, and Kennedy cuts across the grass to reach it.] It's another world entirely. Life and death doesn't mean the same thing here, somehow. [He eyes the wings on Bush's back.] Those wouldn't hurt if you were dead, you know.

[This is sound logic, and brings a smile to his face. Archie always was a clever one. And if anyone knows if you're dead or not, it stands to reason a dead man would.] So they don't. [His wings flap excitedly.] So they don't.

[...Wait, this means...] Kennedy, you dog! [He pats Archie's shoulder.] How'd you manage it?

Manage what?

[Oh.]

I...didn't manage anything.

Then Pellew did all the heavy lifting? Good on you! You could have told me, though, or Horatio; he's been a wreck, since.

[Archie's reserved happiness at seeing William again goes very, very still.]

...Has he?

[He knows this, he heard it, but if Bush saw it...]

Oh, he... don't tell him I told you, but, well... he doesn't let on, but there's something missing, certain sure. [He sighs, scratching the back of his head. His mirth, too, has disappeared in sight of this topic.]

[For one flash of a moment, he is standing in the captain's cabin of the Retribution, invisible to all eyes, watching Horatio bent with quiet grief.]

[A forced smile.] Come along. We'll get you three sheets to the wind and explain everything, in that order.
