Ears didn't know what happened. That last day went so, so fast. He'd been asleep, in his cell, and then a guard was jerking him down a hallway by the scruff of his neck before he could get his feet under himself. He's tried to ask them where he was going, but it'd been so long since he'd last spoken to anyone at all. The rasp he made startled him, and by the time he finished evaluating it, he was shoved into the control room, and stood between two men with guns, behind the captive Doctor, and near enough to Jack that he could have reached out and touched him.
Jack, center of his world, didn't even notice him.
He wrapped his arms around himself and held himself in while the young woman he'd seen with the Doctor a year ago knelt before the Doctor, and then he felt his chest swell with... someting. Some echo of recognition while the humans in the room chanted, some quietly, others at the top of their lungs. Doctor, Doctor, Doctor.
That should be him, shouldn't it?
The Master looked so much smaller, when the Doctor put his arms around him. Ears couldn't pinpoint the way he suddenly felt wistful, and he looked at Jack, but his fact still didn't see him. And then he ran off, at the Doctor's order, and then the Master and the Doctor disappeared in a blaze of light.
And then there was an explosion, somewhere deep in the ship. Ears was thrown to the floor, and he felt the universe begin to seal itself.
And he fell through the closing gap.
