http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Gai [personality] A splash of color. A ray of sunshine. A burst of passion. A cloudless sky.
Gai is the one man that nobody seems to understand, because he tries to explain himself and demonstrate who he is to all he meets. In a series filled with riddles wrapped in mysteries wrapped in enigmas, he is the open book who wears his heart on his sleeve, bewildering all who try and look underneath the underneath, certain that this transparency must hide something more.
There is nothing more than Gai himself. He's a man of pure passions and pure intent, throwing his entire being into every endeavor, holding nothing back, whether it's honesty, emotions, effort, or risk. He doesn't believe in doing things half-heartedly, and failure and giving up are not concepts he seems capable of accepting, or even understanding at times--there is no such thing, only temporary setbacks and obstacles to overcome, opportunities to seize. He doesn't believe in limits or potential, because one would imply the other--there is no such thing as a set amount of potential, only the boundless capacity for growth and change, and the will to do so. Where someone stands in terms of ability is a single point on an infinite scale, ready to be advanced down. This determination, this pure willpower, this unshakable passion to forever strive and move forward is something that defines him. Yes, sometimes he is (very) oblivious, and yes, his memory is not all that it probably should be, because he doesn't want to look back. Pining for what we've lost and living out our regrets is pointless and draining, and so he simply prefers to surge ahead to bigger and better things. He cherishes what he has, he loves to live, and he always wishes, hopes, and dreams for something better--and then moves to make it a reality. There's no excuse to settle for anything but the very best--and since one can never be the very best they can possibly be, one should never settle and stop trying.
It's partially this refusal to hold anything back that makes him so strange. Gai never restrains his emotions or compassion, even going so far as to break down sobbing in front of an entire arena full of people because of how touched he was by his student's diligence. He is honest and open to a fault, pure and innocent in a way that very few can remain for long, even after growing up during the horrors of wartime; he is entirely uncalculating, and thus, often bewilderingly unpredictable, as people following their hearts tend to be. He dreams, he wishes, he hopes, he lives, he loves, and he feels in an extremely vivid way, unshadowed by loss or regret--he refuses to allow himself to regret, by making only choices that he can be proud of, and sees the good, humanity, and capacity for greatness in everyone and everything. Every cloud has a silver lining--and if it doesn't, he will provide one, with his My Rules philosophy. By imposing restrictions and punishments on himself, he inspires himself to even greater heights and breaks through barriers, turning a defeat into a beneficial experience that will allow him to become even better than he already is. This includes promises; Gai values honesty, honor, and being dependable, and so has a high form of promises that he upholds even unto death, signifying their status as an unbreakable vow by making them with a Nice Guy Pose--a wink, thumbs up, and tooth-glinting smile.
This dependability and attentiveness leads to some incredible loyalty; Gai never betrays his precious people, ever. He will punish them, advise them, hurt or discomfort them for their own good, drag them on insane antics, lecture them to try and provoke inspiration and understanding, even harass them on a nigh-daily basis for years on end..... but he never betrays them, nor will he abandon them. He's one of the few adults in his world who always takes time out for his students and friends, showering them with affection and attention, guiding them every step of the way and doing everything in his power to help them become great--because after all, his strength is theirs, and theirs is his, and there is no shame for him in devoting himself utterly to helping someone, or in taking someone as an inspiration to push himself further along. He takes without taking, gives without asking or being asked, and proves that strength and competition don't have to be zero-sum games. He has unwavering confidence and determination, steely resolve, boundless faith. He believes. And he impacts others with that belief, and by trying to get them to believe, as well.
All of this, all of himself, what makes Gai uniquely him, is what he has cultivated over the majority of his life. He has worked hard for everything, including his personality; by no means is he stupid just because he can be oblivious. Gai is an intelligent, philosophical man, who seldom shows these facets of himself in ways that people recognize, because he's too busy expressing them and his morals in their practical forms--which just so happen to end up typically being flamboyant, joyful, carefree actions which tend to provoke either incredulity, facepalming, or lots of humor. Unlike his prized student, who could be considered a young man who became far too mature before he was supposed to, Gai is an adult who has retained, in some ways, the eyes and heart of a child.
After all, if he hadn't hung onto them, how else could he harness THE POWER OF YOUTH?
[orientation] Unknown. It's never hinted at in canon, though the "fanbooks" which typically provide supplemental information to canon have offered some humorous tidbits which suggest Gai pretty much doesn't discriminate at all when it comes to love.
[appearance] N/A; he's already QUITE adult, thank you very much.
[wish] That the Will of Fire will burn strong forevermore.
[requested house] Kawabari, Tsuyosa, or Komainu
[misc notes] Gai is a ninja; he has been trained to harness his spiritual energy to accomplish many inhuman feats--abilities which will be fully sealed away in Ukiyo. However, his focus is on hand-to-hand combat and physical training, both with weapons and especially without; he's one of the fastest, strongest characters with the most stamina in his series, by pure virtue of grueling practice and hard work. This has allowed him to be canonly capable of some pretty ridiculous stunts without using chakra at all, such as slamming a man through a wall, which he will likely remain capable of even with the jade bracelet.

"Shhhh. Just be still. Let me take a look at you." Gai's voice was uncharacteristically soft as he worked on removing his friend's yukata, pressing a gentle kiss to one blackened ear; his lips lingered just long enough to feel them shudder. But his hands were quick and firm as they stripped each article off, carefully setting them aside before starting to explore his new partner's body. Every curve and plane, each line of muscle, the hard ridge of their collar bone, each and every spiraling black tendril of ink engulfing them.....
He tasted them in their entirety with fingers and palms, lips and tongue, gentle grazes of his teeth as he helped them into the prepared bath and started washing them. The water was warm and fragrant, a scattering of flower petals eddying across the surface as it steamed, and his partner steamed with it; their skin was hot to the touch, burning with something far more dangerous than fever. Their eyes burned too, sharp and brittle and manic-bright, dancing with something almost like madness. They quaked under him harder with every touch, breath rasping and labored, pulse racing until Gai thought their flower might simply bloom with blood as well as ink.
Blood welled up under their nails, too, as they dug them into his arm, his hip; he ignored it. A good bath would keep them uninfected. What concerned him more was just how incredibly far the ink had spread. "You should have come to me sooner. If you had waited much longer--" He knew exactly how much danger they were in. While he had never allowed his curse to get even close to this far along, he understood enough to know that the insanity, that death, at this stage--
He was shaking, too. His hands wouldn't stay still--too big, too calloused, too strong for someone who was so far gone, tanned hands that looked pale against the ink that was so quickly claiming their mind and body. He hardly realized he was crying until he saw the first tears falling into the bath, but he couldn't have started just then; he tasted salt, and his eyes were burning, throat so tight it seemed he would choke on the steam. He let himself weep openly, unashamed, let the tears soaking his cheeks mingle with the bath water trailing hot crystalline beads over tanned flesh. They were saying something, snarling with impatience, but the words rushed past his ears as little more than senseless noise. "You always have a place here. Whatever the time, it doesn't matter. Tell them I'm expecting you. Just remember that--please. You don't have to do this to yourself."
He kissed them before they could argue, and oh, it tasted foul--soap and ink and a hint of bile, with the hot, cloying, syrup-sweet taint of unnatural sickness. Didn't matter. He needed to take them, right now, before they reached the point of no return.
Slow, gentle pleasure gave way to a frightened, desperate tenderness; he devoured their mouth, sucked on their tongue, slid a knee between their legs to let them grind against it. They fell back against the edge of the tub together in a tangle of limbs, water sloshing over the edge of the tub to splatter on the floor. He pressed himself against them, covering them with his body, heat on heat in heat; they clawed raw, angry red lines down his back as he rocked against them, sliding one soap-slicked hand down their body to press solidly between their legs. He had always been large and strong for his age, always been good at protecting people--but he knew this was one thing that couldn't be fought against, not directly on the battlefield. Right now, his enemy was his friend, and the victory he had to win was over their own mind and heart. He needed to conquer their body to rescue this hostage alive.
And maybe, maybe, if he could get them to actually listen to him now..... he could win not only the battle, but the war itself. Someday, maybe he would help them to realize that there was no shame in accepting help--that it was something to take pride in, being strong and capable enough of baring your soul, of reaching out to another and sharing in their strength to achieve victory again and again over forces beyond their control. (It's not a curse. It's not. It's a warning. It's a mirror. Don't you see how it's making everything real? Don't you see how it's playing out everything in your heart and magnifying the consequences? If you only understood how much you're only hurting yourself and all of us by forcing yourself to stay at such a distance....)
Kinks List
[YES]
✓ Strong personalities/force of character/personal charisma
✓ Competition--in the literal sense with athletics and the like, or with the people, either is probably fine.
✓ Anal
✓ Oral
✓ Het
✓ Yaoi
✓ Multiple partners--the logistics of this sound tricky. It's probably fine, but OOC planning is probably needed.
✓ Shipping--almost certainly okay! Chemistry is fun, let's talk about this.
✓ Polyamory--Gai is practically made of this, at least informally. He is good at loving people, but not so good at being exclusive.
✓ Romance--again, Gai is all for romance, he just has trouble with keeping it to one person.
[PROBABLY]
✓ Accidental stimulation
✓ Age differences--asking first is good, just to be sure, but Gai is pretty flexible so long as you're a legitimate, mature adult. Mental and emotional readiness is most important, but like 13 would be his cut-off point physically.
✓ Emotional stuff/angst/whatever--almost certainly, provided it's IC and plot-relevant and whatnot.
[MAYBE]
? Dominance type stuff--on the fence about this simply because Gai doesn't really give a damn for the most part. But go ahead and ask if you want.
? Dubcon--very iffy. This is on a completely case-by-case basis. You can ask if you want, but have the scenario in mind, because that'll make or break the request.
? BDSM--depends on the type; this one is relatively context-sensitive, so bring a scenario with you.
? Bloodplay--he's a fighter, so it's possible, but somewhat dubious. Ask?
? Head games--Bring a scenario when you ask, and we'll see? Head games are fun, but can be awkward with a character like Gai.
??? ANYTHING ELSE--this is far from an exhaustive list. Feel free to ask about whatever.
[NO]
X Abuse--giving or receiving. You could ask if it was from a third party for hurt/comfort scenarios, though.
X Noncon--maybe if you provide some really top-notch reasoning and plot work, but it's probably not going to happen, and Gai would never be the one giving it.
X Anonymous sex--Gai just wouldn't do it. He might hook up with someone who's just an acquaintance after an hour or two chatting in a bar, but he's not messing around with someone he doesn't know at all.
X Scat play
