Is it an insult to call a male pretty?

Although there are males that are deemable as pretty - it may be that the said male would find it degrading to fall under a female trait and may take it as an insult - which would give off an insecurity to the person that you are wishing to compliment.

But why do they think that a female trait is an insult?

It's a good question, yet it probably has to do with fact that men detest being affiliated with feminism.

No, they're not, I can assure that much. Yet I'm sure if you complimented him in a more masculine fashion there would be less resistance on his part.

You could let him know that you find this male persons features to be quite attractive - rather than using a word other than pretty; a word less feminine.

I'm not sure if this person would be more androgynous, as I haven't met them - yet if they're as pretty as you say - then I'd suggest you flatter him, and find a happy medium without the intention of insulting him or he may prove to continously defensive.
