What? Mimmi is gone?

[She sounded tremendously worried as well; she had spent a long while reassuring Mimmi about Ed's disappearance, and now she had gone missing too.]

I ... she is okay, she has to be.

I was hearing her, like normal, then she was gone.

[Lika doesn't think Mimmi can turn off her emotions like Batou.]

You mean with your mind?

[She gulped; that meant Mimmi was either gone or on some part of the ship that the captain had shielded; either were not good thoughts.]

She probably was sent home ...

[Hadn't Mimmi said home wasn't that great? Kate sighed.]

Yes, telepathy. Her room is close enough and I know her well enough that I can pick her out from the background. She's not there anymore.

[Sigh.]

Her home is a bad place, Kate.

Oh dear ... I ... hope she is safe then.

Probably not. She's part of a cultural minority that the rulers of her region are trying to exterminate.

[Everything Lika knows about WWII comes from the 51st-century equivalent of Wikipedia.]

[She shuddered. It was so much easier to put your fingers in your ears and pretend the world was better.]

That is horrible... She did not tell me that.

She doesn't like to talk about it, but she told me what year she was from, and our worlds have a common history at least to that point.

In my world, they were stopped, but at great cost, and not before they killed more than 10 million people.

[This is ancient history to her, but life for Mimmi.]

Ten ... million? I ... that is terrible! I have never heard of a war so costly.

That wasn't the war casualties, that was the genocide attempt.

The total dead were at least 50 million, and my helpmate says that's a conservative estimate.

[Not being a student of ancient history, she doesn't have detailed casualty statistics on her helpmate.]

[She was silent for a long while.]

I ... cannot even imagine that many people existing ...

Non-industrial civilizations can't support those numbers.

[Why, yes, she's trying to distract herself.]

That is so many ... my capitol holds 2 hundred thousand people, and I thought that was a great many.

Still ... I have to hope she will be all right.

[Statistically improbable, Kate. And even if Mimmi survives the war, she's still stuck in the Dark Ages.]

She has to survive...three years until the end of the war.

OH dear ...

Wait, how do you know when her war is going to end?

[Kate blinked.]

Our worlds had the same history up until then. Mimmi's from 1942, and in my world, the war ended in 1945.
