[008] I'm sure the demographics data will be quite useful. Somehow.

If my fellow passengers would indulge my curiosity: If you're from a place that uses or used the AD or CE dating system, what year is it where you're from?

It's 5032 at home, but we don't use that calendar anymore.

((OOC: If I get enough responses, I'll do a for-real statistical analysis and have Lika report on the findings.))

ace, hajime, bryn, catpaw, i'm from the future!, walking straight into the fourth wall, not stupid just earnest, christine, eon, ki, russ, batou, herz

It was 2008 when I left...2009 now, my time.

Mimmi's from the 1940's...The guy from the future is gone now I think. Haven't seen him in a while.

Yes, I knew about Mimmi.

You're also from the early 21st century? There are a lot of passengers clustered around then--and the 1940s aren't terribly far off from then, either.

[She's bemused.]

Yeah, I noticed that too.

...so wait, you're from the 51st century?

That's even further away from the 21st than that other Captain. I think he was from...

[She pauses, thinking.]

The 23rd? He didn't stay long though.

Yes. We don't call it that, though.

[There's a pause.]

A lot of interesting things happened in the 2400s. That's when the first Martian colony was established!

...I'm Lika. Who are you?

I'm Bryn. Nice to meetcha!

So, wait, if you don't call it the 51st century then what do you call--

...

Waitasecond. Martian colonies?

[Holy crap that's so cool!]

...

Holy crap that's so cool!

Waitwait, it was cool yeah? Not like some crazy invasion? It was more of an ambassador thing...or...whatever?

[She laughs. Bryn is funny.]

The date is Diaspora 499, and Mars didn't have any life bigger than bacteria until humans settled it.

Diaspora 499... almost five-hundred years since some sort of scattering...?

[This is kinda cool, trying to figure this out.]

And the martians are just...other humans?

Oh.

Sorry, I'm slow. I thought you were talking about Martians on earth not...humans going to Mars. Hah. Whoops.

[She laughs again.]

Martians are humans who live on Mars. Titanians are humans who live on Titan. And so forth.

About 500 years since the tunnel drive was invented, yes. Ah, that's the faster-than-light drive.

...I was looking forward to the Disapora Day celebrations next year.

I get it now.

[She laughs a bit. This was so cool.]

What do your people do to celebrate Diaspora Day? Maybe we could do somethin' here?

[An excuse to have a party? Count Bryn in~]

You do...whatever appeals to you. There are lectures, various art exhibitions, parties...on Titan we pump a lot of oxygen into the atmosphere and then light off the hydrocarbons along the jets. The Europans seed Jupiter's upper atmosphere with ionizers and then do a storm show that gets transmitted to the rest of the System. The Martians used to play with the corona and trigger flare activity like they used to do for coronations, but it really wasn't good for Earth and the Redemption Authority made them stop....

[Lika trails off.]

The hemi-millennial is going to be really big, too. All the colonies are sending representatives.

[She's wistful.]

[What Bryn gathered from all of that was...really awesome space fireworks. Even she was sad to be missing it, even if she wouldn't have been able to see them in the first place.]

That sounds so awesome...

Hey, maybe the Captain can do something like that when it comes around? I mean, if he can manage a crazy ship like this and hold crazy parties like that Masquerade and stuff...flood the ship with rabbits...I bet he could do some of those same things! Second best thing to actually being there, yeah?

It's great! I have recordings of the celebrations on Europa while I was there as a student if you want to--

[She stops short as she remembers Bryn doesn't have the right neural implants to experience them.]

Never mind. You don't have the equipment; I can't send them to you.

[She sounds crestfallen. Oh, well, maybe Batou will want to.]

...I suppose? I could ask, but he's not very accommodating.

[What with the gravity and the buffet full of meat.]

Oh well...maybe we could get the right equipment so I can see? You could ask the mechanic if he's got anything that might work...

[Bryn would totally like to see and Lika sounds like she's got a bad case of homesickness.]

Ah...you would need a brain implant.

But there may be a way to transmit just the sound and visuals to a, ah...television? Baijznyherglert'allalax would know.

There's a large screen in the library! Maybe you could hook something up there...

I'll ask Baijznyherglert'allalax.
