4) Thanks to Petzi for sharing this article about
the state of family films.
“The really big event family film like ‘Frozen’ I don’t think will ultimately go anywhere,” said Doug Creutz, an analyst at investment firm Cowen, echoing the thoughts of several Hollywood observers. “But for a lot of other titles, even after the pandemic ends, the idea of going to see a family film may not be what it was.”
If anything this sounds like good news to me. That means that most parents are not taking their unvaccinated kids to be in a theater with many other unvaccinated (and unmasked) kids. On the downside some parents might but they can't afford the tickets because their income has been upended.
Also, there was a lot of negative feedback about the new Space Jam movie by adults. Some excused it by saying it was, after all, a kid's film. But whether or not a movie is good enough for adults to want to see it has a lot to do with whether or not it does well in movie theaters. Paw Patrol sure isn't it. And yet Pixar was smart enough to send both its last two movies direct to streaming even though Soul was probably the most adult oriented film they've made.
I should add that this conflation of animated film with "family film" is also part of the problem. One does not = the other.
“It just has to feel premium now,” said William Barstow, chief executive of the Main Street Theatres chain based in Omaha “You can’t just throw out a flat cartoon anymore. Families are too smart. "
Shouldn't a movie you're paying around $10 to view be premium by definition? That's more than a whole month of some streaming services (not to mention other costs). And to say that families are "too smart" to put up with less at this point says a lot about why projects were made into cinema releases to begin with -- a cash grab.
The Disney Plus lineup is a case in point. It includes projects such as “The Mighty Ducks,” “Home Alone,” “Sister Act” and “Turner and Hooch” - all reboots of film hits from the late 1980′s and early 1990′s.
How is that different from Disney doing live action versions of all its old animated films, the second Mary Poppins movie, etc.? Mighty Ducks was not great TV but it was better than I expected. Plus, I notice they failed to mention the projects, such as Big Shot, that were not reboots and deserved more attention than they got. So whose fault is that?
Seibert notes that a “Fairly OddParents” reboot he is producing at Paramount Plus will include live-action in addition to animation, which could attract an older audience.
Is that a real thing? Is that why live action versions are being made, because it's assumed adults won't watch animation?
Just had to comment on this amazing realization from a
discussion of last weekend's box office:
""Clearly it is the movies themselves that people get excited about," Dergarabedian said about what's drawing moviegoers into theaters."
Ya think? I have watched most Marvel movies the first week of their release and paid to see Black Widow on Disney+ both because I wanted to see it quickly and because I wanted to encourage more simultaneous or quick availability via streaming. I'd have done the same for Shang Chi but I'm not willing to up my risks by going to a movie theater. But yes, I go to see particular movies but I've noticed from surveys about moviegoing that clearly studios seem to think that there's any number of other ways they can get people to see them.

vaccine information group which manages to stay civil and be useful to its participants. It does it through strict moderation, which is probably the only way to run any large group.
