1) A birdie
gets pampered. Also, for anyone who remembers the link from last week showing sea turtles being warmed and kept alive in Texas during the temperature drop, a further video was made of them being returned to the sea, which is both
amusing and soothing to see.
Speaking of, I think this will only be freely available another week, but Mike and I watched this
nature doc on Andean pumas that was really beautiful, incredible scenery and cinematography, would highly recommend.
2) Yesterday morning was just a series of errors, so much so that Mike finally gave me a hug and joked "Your honor, permission to treat this day as hostile." I had trouble getting to sleep so didn't rest enough, but frankly trouble sleeping is normal so I didn't think that it was so much worse than usual. However as the day went on I got more and more tired, so apparently it was indeed worse than usual.
But among a number of problems making lunch, I left the wax separator paper on the cheese slice in the sandwich Mike got. He ate about half of it before realizing something was wrong, which probably says something about the rest of the sandwich…
3) Speaking of stuff discussed earlier, I know in the past month I mentioned that many of our online interactions are going to shift to voice if not video, and
it's already underway. "It’s not just Clubhouse that is seeking to harness this trend. Facebook is reported to be creating a Clubhouse clone, while Twitter Spaces is the microblogging network’s latest foray into the audio space. The tech industry analyst Jeremiah Owyang has identified more than 30 social audio efforts, calling it a “‘Goldilocks’ medium for the 2020s: text is not enough, and video is too much; social audio is just right.”"
I confess that something that hadn't occurred to me before is that one might listen to the equivalent of a chat room rather than read it. (Technically one can already do this through assistive tech but I imagine that it's far from the same thing). A huge problem though would be the immediacy of the medium.
I mean, on the one hand most people probably wouldn't say something to someone else live that they might be willing to say through a text or online post. So it could cut down on some problems, plus it's more obvious with vocal cues how someone meant to say something so misunderstandings should decrease. But text makes us think a moment more before saying something. Unless something was a really major gaffe it wouldn't be out there forever in audio the same way a text post can be, but only because audio still can't be easily searched and listening is much more time consuming than scanning.
But the likelihood of saying dumb things regularly sure seems a lot more likely. And at the same time, the quieter voices would literally be drowned out and sidelined in a voice exchange whereas at least in text platforms they'd be more likely to be noticed and encouraged.
Petzi also shared an article
about the site today. 4) I've now been using Board Game Arena for four months and am usually on there every Sunday with one or more friends. As I mentioned to
shadowscast last week, I am always on the lookout for games that can be played by 4 or more people that are quick and easy to learn. The site has plenty of games on hand, but we often have limited time that makes longer strategic or building games a bad fit. Additionally, some friends are easily confused by games with a lot of rules and since I like to offer some variety, I'd like to do more than rotate among the three hits so far - Solo, Tock, and Oh Hell.
Anyone have any recommendations? It could also be for physical board games you're familiar with, since there may well be an equivalent or the same game on the site.
5) Last minute reminder that
marchmetamatterschallenge starts its 2021 session tomorrow! So if you haven't already heard about it, check out
