check this out. wednesday my band had a semi-final for a battle of the bands at club mirrors in dc. we were against 3 other acts, two of which were solo female singers (r&b style) and the other was a band. in these competitions live music usually has an upper hand over the solo acts. we knew going into it that it was going to come down to the two bands. this battle is based on performance and not how big of a crowd you bring so that's extra points for us.
we played second in the line up. we played "good foot" so we were putting our best song forward. the judges (assorted radio personalites, record type people, and newspaper columnists) gave us a collective 39 out of 40. not bad.
the other acts got mid 30's scores... until the last band. they also got a 39. we were deadlocked and the judges had to deliberate and pick a winner.
i was only slightly concerned because the other band had a very good singer but the band itself was lacking. basically it came down to her voice against our band. i knew she didn't have it.
shitty part was, i had to play on their drum kit... i was not pleased about this because he played on a smaller kit. whatever.
bottom line. the judges came up with a winner. and it was US! we walked out of there with a giant happy gilmore check for $2,500 and it's off to the finals, which are worth $20,000! we're going to be rich!
we're playing recher theatre on thursday the 12th. you should come. it's an early show. and it costs $5. call me to get tickets.
bitches!
