new words for old desires
TV I'm currently enjoying:
1. Amanda Redman a.k.a. New Tricks. I know this show is MOR and aimed at old people, but I still enjoy it. I still want All The Fic of Sandra Pullman. Roll on Yuletide!
2. Mildred Pierce - just finished this & gosh but Veda is (spoiler!) so, so, evil. This was so much more of a downer than I thought it would be, even if Kate Winslet is always a delight.
3. Jack's ass and het power dynamics a.k.a. S1 Torchwood rewatch. Only managed the first episode of Miracle Day (I am assured it eventually gets better?) but it was damn good when it started.
ALSO, if you like fantasy, you might enjoy the series 'Shadows of the Apt' by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I've read the first three books, and it's mostly standard genre stuff, but really, really well done - especially the big battle scenes in book 2 ('Dragonfly Falling'). I'm a total sucker for tragic heroism and (especially) reinforcements arriving (see also "At dawn on the fifth day, look to the east..."), and it certainly presses those buttons.
I recently watched A Very Potter Musical + Sequel, and enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. I think the sequel is a lot more patchy than AVPM, and there were some bits I was bemused by - though it did contain a conversation between Harry and a drunk Snape which I found enjoyable, so there's that. Overall, I found Snape and Draco most endearing/hilarious, particularly Draco's rolling around on the floor, which got me every time. As for villains, Voldemort in AVPM was awesome, whereas Umbridge in the sequel had moments of hilarity but generally fell short of what you could see the creators had imagined. Lucius' dancing was a brilliant idea. I would recommend watching them if you like HP and haven't already seen them.
And I'm reading a lot of Devil Wears Prada fic, especially by chainofclovers and thinking about how it matches my fannish preferences in terms of yearning and specific, bittersweet moments. So that's the extent of my fandom involvement at the moment.
