There's got to be something wrong with the world. In my freshman year of high school a girl committed suicide. And now, for two consecutive years after I graduate from high school, a student has died each year since. Last year a girl died from a heart condition, this year a student is shot and killed.
This morning I started work at the PLU music office at 8AM. At about 9:30AM the chair of the music department arrives and comments to his secretary, "Did you hear about the shooting at Foss?" Even though my first reaction is to think of my high school, my logic kicked in and thought he was talking about the Foss dorm on the PLU campus. But then I wondered why he would be so calm about it if it were on campus, so I ask for verification from one of the other office people. "At Foss High School there was a shooting this morning." I froze, then said "That's where my sister goes to school, where I graduated from."
At this point I didn't really know what to do. School shootings are always things that happen at that one school way over in another state, they don't happen at the high school I graduated from where my little sister and several of my friends still attend.
I actually wasn't worried about my sister, because as the people in the music office were commenting about what they'd heard, they said it was gang-related, and I'm pretty sure my sister isn't involved in a gang. Soooo I texted Jamie. All I could really verify from that was that someone was shot and killed and from her response, I guessed it hadn't been people I knew. But alas, I had work until noon and waited to call people until then.
I've heard/read many mixed stories about what happened, but a student was shot and killed for sure. Here's one of the various news stories about it, if anyone's interested.
