Oil companies conduct potentially destructive seismic tests to search for oil. Large air guns fire sound waves into the ocean at crushing decibel levels, disrupting fish and marine mammals as they navigate, feed and reproduce.
Seismic blasts cause hearing damage in whales and dolphins, who use sound just like we use our eyes. In rare cases, whales have stranded themselves on nearby beaches to die, rather than enduring more sonic torture.
The Obama Administration has proposed to allow seismic testing near Jacksonville's beaches -- the only place in the world where endangered North Atlantic Right whales give birth and nurse their young.
