I can't believe it's May! And I haven't written in a month! This is because April was a complete wash. I was either sick or working my ass off. No sooner had I finished reeling from my first book auction in mid-March when I was already processing a giant collection for mid-June. I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering how the job was working for you. My thought process actually went something like this: "Lauren hasn't posted anything in a while. I wonder if it's because she's been swamped with that job. You know, a personal essay about working with rare and expensive books would be a neat thing to have on the HBC..." Yeah, everything goes back to the HBC with me lately.

Haha, well, if you're interested in writing it, I'm interested in publishing it. ;)

Can I use lots of swears? On some days, I feel that working with rare books incurs a lot of swears. Of course, I think that has less to do with the books (unless I drop them) and more with the people who are making me work with them.

Well, I feel that most of the time in writing, swearing can be eschewed for better descriptions. However, if swearing is what you actually end up doing over the course of the day, then you are using it in a truthful and effective way. Sort of like Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral, where he keeps saying "fuck" because he's late and "bugger" when Andie MacDowell shows up at the last wedding.

So I guess it's all in the set-up. If you want to say that working with rare books causes you to swear like a sailor, then go for it!
