nippon version 2.0

Jun 18, 2007 20:48

I just realized that it's the middle of June. What happened? Where did the time go?

In five weeks I'm headed to Fukuoka for five weeks of Japanese lessons. I'm very, very excited about this. After this five week course I'll probably be quite good at basic conversation. I already do pretty well... who knows. If I'm lucky I might be able to have a borderline intelligent conversation! Yahoo!

So it's version 2.0 because the vast majority of my friends are saying sayonara. They'll be off to America or the UK to do something or other. A month ago I was upset with this, but now I'm beginning to view it as a bit of a blessing. It will give me a chance to start over, be more independent, and meet more people. Though I'll miss them, I'm actually glad they're going.

Version 2.0 will also have somewhere between 5-6 weeks spent outside of Japan in South East Asia, India, and maybe China. Who knows? Regardless, I'm going to use most of my vacation time to see the world. And I can't wait.

In 2.0 I'll actually be starting off the year with a working knowledge of the language. Looking back on it, I spent my first 4 or 5 months in Japan living as a mute. And the man that interviewed me for JET said that the language really comes in the second year... so here's hoping.

This is such a blast. I'm literally getting paid for a year long vacation.
