This weekend was our first soccer game of the season. Unfortunately both Lily and Bonnie had to miss it because they were sick. Lily actually wanted to go despite being ill, but since the temperature was supposed to be 34 degrees at game time we figured it was best for her to stay home.
It actually wasn’t all that bad at the field, though, since for a wonder it wasn’t windy out. It’s always windy at the fields! And we even managed to win the game. More importantly, the kids seemed to have fun (one of the girls, for whom I believe this is her first season and who really seems to be catching on quick, ran off the field at halftime and called to me “I love playing soccer!”).
Sunday was Evan’s Pinewood Derby for Webelos. Unfortunately he lost in the first heat, though it was a close thing. But judging by his just-for-fun races after the competition he was the victim of a bad draw, since his car won most of those runs. Ah well - he had fun with it, and didn’t seem at all bummed by the loss.
The kids have invented a game to play outside with the dog, which they call “Toyball.” It’s basically like baseball, except that instead of a ball they use one of the dog toys. Someone pitches the toy, and the batter has to try and hit it. The dog, of course, chases her toy and grabs it, which means the fielder has to catch the dog and wrestle the toy away from her before they can try and get the runner out. The dog runs herself ragged, and the kids have fun running around. The only problem is trying to reign in Evan’s tendency to rewrite the rules in his favor as he goes along :P
We mostly stuck around the house this weekend, but it was very good nonetheless. Bonnie and I spent a lot of time together, enjoying each other and grossing out the kids with displays of affection.
