So this morning as I'm driving into work, NPR was airing a story about how people in California are protesting/picketing outside of businesses owned by people who contributed to funds to pass Proposition 8. For those who may not know, Prop 8 is the ballot initiative passed in California during the last election that restricts marriage to one mand and one woman. Prior to that, gay couples had the legal right to marry in California.
One of the business owners being picketed had contributed $20,000.00 to the Prop 8 fund. When interviewed about the gay rights protests outside his business, he confessed to being "mystified" by the reaction because his business had "always enjoyed good relations with the gay community in the past."
Mystified? MYSTIFIED?! You spent TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS in support of taking away these people's legal right to marry, and you're mystified that they're angry with you? Could you possibly be more clueless?
So what if you've "always enjoyed good relations with the gay community in the past." All that means is that your overwhelming contribution to oppressing these people is an outright act of betrayal.
