Pitchfork Music Festival took over Union Park the 18th 19th and 20th. I only made it on the 20th, decided to go at the last minute, buying a ticket from a scalper as I got off the L. And, wow, I have never seen so many bikes in one place...they were locked to everything stationary for blocks around the park.
There were 19 sets on the lineup that day. I got there late and between the three stages, I saw 6 memorable acts.
and got a second hand high. oops.
Boris: meh.
HEALTH: I'll need to check them out some more. They were really fun with synth and drums and a female vocalist.
The Apple in Stereo: Fun. High energy for older dudes...yup.
Occidental Brother Dance Band International: Sassy and Jazzy, played heavily into all the middle-class-white-kids interest in Africa I think....
Bon Iver:
Gorgeous sounding. He was cute, taking a picture of the crowd on his personal camera before he stated his set. For Wolves Act I and II he had the audience sing "what might have been lost" over and over saying "this song doesn't feature you, it needs you." Probably a highlighting moment of my summer.
Spoon: Long Live Rock 'n' Roll! I probably would have enjoyed this one better if it weren't so late, I wasn't so tired and hungry and if I had a buddy to dance with.
Afterward just about everyone who didn't come on their bike flooded the L.
I thought the platform might collapse.
There have been a lot of phases I've gone through when the music I was into was old and the artists weren't performing--at least not freshly or regularly. It's nice to be into current music for a change. However, I am not a big fan of seeing concerts alone. I mean, I chatted with some strangers, but since I went last minute and didn't find anyone to go with me. Not having a companion detracted from the experience, I think. Ian--I know you do it all the time, but I don't like it so much.
