No more official knee updates. I saw the surgeon on Tuesday and he said my knee is very stable. I'm walking, but still a little gimpy. I can't quite bend and straighten my leg all the way yet, though it is close. Apparently I'm going to have to keep treating swelling for at least 2 months--also that long until I can run and bike safely. I'll be doing physical therapy until I leave Albuquerque.
Speaking of leaving Albuquerque, I believe it's exactly a month away that Neal will come get me and we will be homeward bound. It seems like the school year can't end fast enough. Unfortunately, my 8th graders seem to feel the same way. It's like pulling teeth to get them to discuss literature and twisting arms to get them to put effort into their writing. They've checked out.
However, I actually got a new 6th grade student yesterday. He is the cousin of one of my 7th graders and at the beginning of the week he went to one of the two nearby middle schools. On Monday or Tuesday he got beat up by a gang and didn't go back to school the public school after that. Yesterday morning when he showed up in my classroom he had a black eye. It seems strange that he would have gotten in such a position to get beat up. He's seems like a very well behaved kid and he works hard in class and he is bright. However, new students always seem to be little angels until they warm up and get comfortable. My last mid-year new student was good for about two weeks and now he is the most rowdy kid in both classes I teach with him in it. We'll see how these next/last few weeks go with this new one.
Today I was the teacher who got to sit in with the seventh grade girls while they had a guest speaker giving them the sex education talk. I was impressed--she really had a gift for telling it like it is without being really graphic and grossing the girls out to the point of plugging their ears. She also covered a lot of things they did not tell us when I had sex ed back in the day. To be honest, a few of the things she explained were new to me or at least made some things clearer. I had never seen someone actually put a condom on a banana, but she did! Actually, I've had to talk about sex related things a lot with my 8th graders this year because they are not very shy about speaking their mind and asking questions. It's not as difficult as I might have thought....
The last week of school I am going on a camping trip with the 6th and 7th graders. I volunteered to be the camp cook--it'll be a blast from the past! I'm pretty pumped about that. Pretty soon I have to plan the menu... But final exams first, I suppose. So much to do. Even though I am counting the days, I think the school year will end quickly.
Then--onward to the wedding! I have been dreaming about being married almost every night.
