Asking Advice #06: The Little People

Jul 12, 2010 01:57

This is what we want to know this week:

How do you deal with bonding with your character. How do you deal with the other characters? The little people, the background or minor characters? How are your readers supposed to feel about them?

Let the scribblers know :)

And comments will be screened until Friday and this week's prompt can be found here. ( Read more... )

Usually, all my characters are a piece of me. Literally. They all have at least one of my characteristics or flaws or insecurities. I don't do it on purpose, but it allows me to bond on a deeper level with all my characters, even the tiny ones. My readers are supposed to feel anyway they want about them. I won't dictate to them. My characters are open.

I like to bond with my characters by just doing my every day stuff but either thinking about how they would respond or actually doing it like they would.
So, for example, if I am grocery shopping, I try to think about what my character would buy. I will sometimes actually shop like they would, depending on how close I need to get with them. Sometimes characters that are not coming as easily as others, I choose to act like they would for a bit. My husband laughs at me....but eh? What can you do? I think he's secretly entertained by it. ;)

I try to treat every one of my characters the same, be it small or main. Sometimes the smallest character is the one that has the most impact. I go through the same process with them that I would with my main characters.
