Yesterday I went to a supposedly PETA-organized anti-circus demo. And it was funny because J (and I, for a little bit) ended up with the bullhorn. I enjoyed passing the elephant comic books out. Going around saying Did you get your free elephant comic book? works really well as people are buying tickets and at the doors. Parents are stupid. And it ( Read more... )

One of the main reasons I hate PETA is that some of the things they do are really amazing. Then they go and ruin it with all the offensive, sexist, classist and just plain dumb shit they do in addition. They have so much money and so many resources, if they would put it all into doing good work for the animals and less into all the horrible crap they do just to get media attention, they could be the best AR group in the country. But as long as Ingrid Newkirk is in charge, PETA is never going to change. I have been at conferences where she has talked and have talked to her along with many other people about how she justifies her campaign choices. Usually it always goes to the sexist things PETA does. Her only response is "I'm a feminist." That is all she will say on the issue and refuses to discuss it. I think my 2 favorite reasons to hate PETA are the "Fur Trim, Unattractive" ad they put out with the woman in the bikini & using the Homeless as unpaid advertising under the guise of a coat drive. They are so fucked up. I really do hate them. However, some PETA activists are actually really good & nice people. It seems every few years a new group of people starting working for PETA hoping they can do good stuff within the organization and it is one of the only ways you can get paid to do fulltime AR activism. Usually it seems people realize that you aren't going to change PETA and get to a point where they can't stand it anymore, but you can't really blame them for trying.

Fuck yeah. Completely agreed.
I became a member; I was under the impression that they needed my abilities and talents. What they wanted was one more brown face that could actually speak Spanish for the Telemundo or Univision (Spanish television) news cameras.
I had no idea they were using the homeless... that's truly fucked up. The more I learn the happier I am that I haven't renewed my membership.

Yeah, they have done a bunch of things where they give away Fur Coats to the homeless with anti-fur messages on them (I don't know if they are still doing this today or not). Which really feels so fucked up to me. It just feels like turning the homeless into walking billboards while pretending to be helping. Plus, knowing PETA, I am sure part of it is trying to destroy the upscale image of FUR by having homeless people wearing them. It just feels so wrong.

P.S.
your icon is awesome! I love that movie.

Geezis. What the fuck? That's exactly what came to mind -- the image of billboards. I hope they're still not doing that. I've never seen it done out here in NY/NJ.

Hey thanks. :) Smoochy's my hero lol.
