Icky parts of fandom

I'm a huge Viggo fangirl, sometimes so much it embarrasses me to think of how much time I spend looking/hoping/craving him to do something so there will be fan sightings or pics etc. That said, I can't help reacting badly when I hear certain fan reports. Reports that on the surface sound all happy and glowy but then you realize just how stalkerish ( Read more... )

I think you're absolutely right.
I think this is why celebrities have nervous breakdowns. It's the constant barrage of attention from people who believe they should get more than their little fan moment. People who talk to them when they go to the supermarket (if they can still do that), when they go to a sports game, take their kids to Disneyland, you name it. People who believe there is no such thing as a private moment when a celebrity is out in the open.
I agree it's tempting.
I've 'met' Viggo. He signed stuff and talked to people at a red carpet at the Ghent film festival. Of course I was a total stranger to him, a face in the crowd. He made me feel special for a moment and I'll treasure it for the rest of my life.
I would give an arm and a leg to sit down with him and a cup of coffee and have a real conversation, but I'm also realistic enough to know that won't happen. To him I don't exist (and that's probably for the best) and I will certainly not go out of my way to get into his way. The chance to upset him is just too great.
I'm glad Viggo manages to keep some privacy. More power to him.

And remember the concern when Viggo told a reporter that he has to be quite stern with fans sometimes and say "not now!" and everyone was up in arms either on the side of 'how dare they!" to "what's wrong with him now"

I do think Angie has something on the desire to feel special - to be able to brag about it and get attention.

It is fun to see him especially in context of something he's worked on and feels proud of - you want to show him your support and appreciation. Trailing him around after an event is something else.
