Everyone wants a dream, something they can barely see

Ok. First things first. [gratuitous joey reference]Hi Joeykins! You are an amazing volleyball player and an even better world reformer.[/gratuitous joey reference]

I am not feeling particularly motivated to write tonight, even though as I went about my daily little life I was thinking about how I would write it. But as usual, there is a lot going on upstairs and I need to put it somewhere.

I am 100% against the death penalty. Even for Timothy McVeigh. I wonder about him, lying in his cell, with nothing but his thoughts. No question, he is terribly guilty and screwed up, but at some level he has to be frightened. And maybe sad? I would hope he is sad that he ruined so many lives, including his own. They say he spent most of his last day writing letters to people. I wonder what he said. I wonder what he could have said.

And his poor parents. His dad says he was a smart, creative boy. Friendly and happy. It appears that he started to come loose when his mom left his dad when he was 16. So it seems that it started small, and he just slipped away.

He'll be dead in less than 3 hours. I wonder if he is awake. I wonder if the people watching will cheer. I wonder if they will have nightmares about it. I just read that he will be strapped to that table for 30-45 minutes before the execution even begins.

Please don't misunderstand. I am in no way trying to put his suffering above that of his 168 victims or their family and friends. I just think the practice of governmental murder is detestable. It has been misrepresented for years. People operate under the misunderstanding that it deters murder. By nature, murder is either a crime of passion, or is carried out under some form of insanity. What's more, people typically don't think they will be caught. All killing Timothy McVeigh will accomplish is to satisfy this country's need for vengeance. Yes, if someone I cared about was killed, I would want their attacker to die. But our sense of justice shouldn't be borne out of our baser instincts. We should want to be better than that.
