when I go to shows, I try to gage what kind of connection I'm having with a band. do I want to be like them? do I relate musically, lyrically? can I take it seriously? there are a few bands out there, that make me look to the stage and proclaim,
'fuck, I wish this was my band'
my list is:

the stills
dallas green
cursive
our mercury
the kinison
bend sinister
blond redhead
ravonettes
there are tones more I'm sure....
there are a few common points.
most of the vocalists are very very strong and melodic without sounding overatly pretty or feminine.?
the music almost transfers as haunting or mythical in a way.
there is a certain energy created on stage.
I'm just always really happy when I come home inspired and realizing there is a ballance of harsh and holy in music.
I want to sing with/like the ghosts.
