Character
Name: Asuma
Series: Hibiki’s Magic
Timeline: Right before going to save Misaki in chapter 11.
Canon Resource Links: Wikipedia, and a history section written by myself should you need it.

Personality: Asuma is a performer. He performs magic tricks for little kids in his spare time, and not to earn money. He simply takes pleasure in making others happy, and is glad to do the same trick over and over again for the same crowd of children if that’s what it takes. This trait can cause him to do anything from gift a person with a small flower to cheer him or her up to expending his magic in order to save them from an unhappy situation. He is generally more than willing to go out of his way to bestow acts of kindness upon others, no matter what he must personally sacrifice to do so.

Speaking of sacrifices, Asuma is no stranger to the concept. In order to use true magic in his world, one must sacrifice something. In Asuma’s case, it is his life - with every spell cast, he ages up. This does not do much to stop him from using his magic to protect others. In fact, he himself believes that magic should only be used for the good of people; never to cause harm. He demonstrates this belief by using his magic to save people, even though it causes him to age more and more. Despite this, he maintains a cheerful disposition, and is almost always seen with some sort of a smile on his face. He keeps his pains to himself, and is quite good at acting as though nothing is wrong. After all, he is the one who made the decision to help, and he thus pays the appropriate price.

Did I mention he has a habit of giving out flowers to girls? Because he does. But rather than out of any romantic desire, it’s really more of a random act of kindness. After all, nobody is unhappy to receive a small gift in the form of a flower, right? Even so, he certainly doesn’t mind chatting up a cute girl, since they are a bit of a weakness for him. On the bright(?) side, these relationships are never meant to get beyond platonic, likely because he is very aware of the cost of his magic and how it would be more or less impossible to keep a healthy relationship when he is voluntarily rushing towards death.

His intelligence and sheer capacity to adapt to situations are no small things to sneeze at. Considering how much he ages physically with each spell cast (it’s generally measurable in years), he is still able to function in society remarkably well. He is able to take on the position of headmaster of an incredibly prestigious school despite probably being around the age of many of its students. Though he can come off as immature or eccentric at times, nobody questions his age other than those who are already aware of his circumstances. Even before becoming the head of the Royal Kamisaid Magic Academy, he was regarded as a talented magic user who completed all of his training at an unnamed but also prominent institution.

It is also worth noting that Asuma is neither foolish nor reckless. He realizes the weight of each sacrifice, and prefers to investigate before taking action. Though it’s not always obvious, he keeps himself informed of what is going on. He’s quite good at reading people and investigating situations without drawing too much attention to himself. With this knowledge, he can even become frustratingly ambiguous about certain details should he decide it isn’t important for others to know about. However, whether the frustration truly lies in his stubborn insistence on keeping the information to himself or his frivolous manner of acting to cover it up is anyone’s guess.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
+Selfless; he will go through many lengths to make everyone else happy, even at cost to himself.
+Intelligent; he is basically a magical genius and his ordinary intellect is just as impressive.
+Acting; whether it’s a bluff or a sleight of hand trick, Asuma is a fairly talented actor.

Weaknesses:
-Selfless; it’s a double-edged sword. He knows his sacrifices makes others unhappy for his sake and harms him to boot, but he continues with it anyway.
-Awkwardness; though he’s rather good at conversing, he sometimes brings up topics that are a bit strange for a first meeting. Case-in-point, he mentions a young girl would be good with kids just because she happens to give good hugs.
-Frivolity; while he does take serious things seriously, he tends to act outwardly unconcerned, which is jarring for some and outright offensive to others.

[Asuma begins the feed with a cheery wave. After all, it never hurts to start off with a greeting, right?]

Hello!

I’ve discovered something interesting today. These ruins...

[He pans the video towards the dark walls of the Ruins of Alph. Though it is dark, the inscriptions can still be seen thanks to the convenient light of a Ponyta’s flame.]

I’m sure some of you must have noticed it before. These ruins aren’t just scribbles - they’re messages. I haven’t decoded all of it yet, but the lettering is similar enough to the language we use here. If you look closely, it’s not too hard to make out. For example, these ones read, “Our words shall remain here for the ages.”

I’ll admit I’m pretty curious about these. In fact, I’m almost tempted to stay here a little longer just to see how many more I can find. Has anyone else tried investigating these? If you have, maybe we could trade notes.

Third Person Sample:
“One coffee. Yes, that will be all. Thank you, miss.” With a charming smile, Asuma nodded at the waitress. Flushing slightly, she nodded back and walked briskly to the counter, likely to fulfill his order.

His smile widened. He couldn’t help it; there were just so many people out there, with their own stories and circumstances. He hoped, of course, that they were happy with their lives, however they may be. Realistically, he knew that was not always the case.

He found his thoughts wandering back to the subject of his home. It was not the first time, nor was it likely to be the last. He knew plenty about the unhappiness people could go through. If he’d had his way, he would have even tried to put a stop to some of it. Unfortunately, Johto had not been kind enough to allow him the time.

“Oddish, odd?” Blinking, he turned to regard the small Oddish standing on the table. It tilted its entire body, mimicking a child tilting her head in wonderment. A sight Asuma was more than a little familiar with.

“Sorry, I’ve been ignoring you this entire time, haven’t I?” he said softly as he patted it on its leaves. The Oddish seemed to enjoy that, nuzzling his hand rather like a cat. “I’ve never seen a creature like you before I came here…” he mused, mostly to himself. “It was strange at first, I’ll admit. But you’re a good one, aren’t you?” his voice grew lower as he tickled the Oddish. The Oddish closed its eyes with contentment for a few moments, before opening them again with a start and tottering away embarrassedly, causing her trainer to laugh. “Shy, too. But that’s alright. You have plenty of time to grow yet.”

“Sir? Here’s your order,” the waitress said, placing a small cup of coffee in front of Asuma and a bowl of Pokémon food for the Oddish.

“Ah, thank you so much.” With another smile, he nodded to the once again blushing waitress. Time… there was certainly a lot of it here. Time to sit back and enjoy the company of others. Time that he may not have had in his own world…
