Young Avengers v2 #1 Discussion
So I said I wanted a discussion post with comment threads, which I guess means I get to make it, but I'm lazy so I'm just crossposting from my tumblr.
My Really Excessively Long and Detailed Thoughts on Young Avengers #1, with pictures!
The first page advert is for a drink with "ten manly calories." I'd say thanks for reminding me of who the target audience really is, but actually I'm fairly sure that I am part of Gillen's target audience. Yay!
I really appreciate the female gaze on Noh Varr.
I love this whole Skrull attack scene, but especially Kate's expression here. "Really?The spaceship controls are in alien. Of course they are."
What is this green stuff? The door sealing? The door being blasted?
I assume everything with Kate and Noh Varr and the random Skrulls will be explained...sometime.
Okay, so the arm thing...is that a basic Skrull attack or a Fantastic Four/Superskrull thing? I mean, I don't see how being stretchy wouldn't come under shapeshifting anyway, but I guess the limitations are up to each author. Shapeshifting seems so great. It is my immediate answer to "if you could have any superpower" questions. Some shifters can shapeshift down to the molecular level, that is full body control, guys.
Billy Kaplan, drama queen. This whole conversation dissatisfies me, though. The emotions shift too quickly, and there's too much infodump. I appreciate that at least they're talking openly and honestly to each other, but it doesn't seem like a real conversation at all. I kind of want to comment on each panel but I'll refrain. (I know people are already discussing the "foster parents" thing.)
(I will comment on this, because I know this confused someone. The "phone booth" is, I assume, a reference to Superman, and is obviously substituting for "the closet". I thought it was weird too, since you don't stay in the phone booth, you just go there to change, but I guess you don't stay in a closet either. Language, man.)
(Also Billy's shocked face makes me lol every time.)
But then I forget my problems with the scene because aww babies they're so sweet.
Anyway, Teddy has posters of Cap, the Fantastic Four, and the Jets. I want to know what the poster behind Billy's head is. Does it even out the geek:jock ratio?
Look, I totally buy that Billy is very self-absorbed. But he's never considered Teddy's circumstances at all before? I guess it's more the wording I have a problem with than the sentiment. As for his solution... maybe he should know better, but at least he's not trying to raise her from the dead. (That never ends well.) This is how they got Scott Lang back, but the crucial thing there I guess was that they got him from their own universe.
I completely figured out everything going on on this page without text. I really appreciate when comics allow me to do that! McKelvie's layouts are very straightforward: kind of plain but easy to understand. I like them. And of course Loki here just raises all sorts of questions. What exactly is he expecting Billy to do? This seems pretty spur-of-the-moment, but if Billy's been playing around with his powers... Of course Teddy said he was terrified of himself, so why would he? I want answers now dammit!
Goddammit I love Loki and America already. I'll just sit here, waiting for more.
Never give Loki a chance to talk.
...Really? This line is terrible. I don't know if Gillen is just finding his footing with Billy's voice or if we have radically different views of him. :/ I mean, I don't even think that highly of Billy myself! (I still love him but bless his heart.) This just seems off.
So does spelling come under lols or feels? (No, really, I don't know how comics work. Is someone in charge of catching spellings and such or is that just up to the writer? Can the letterer mess things up? I'm not even trying to assign blame I'm just really curious now.)
How famous is Loki? Obviously Teddy would know because he's an Avenger geek AND an Avenger and they were involved in Siege AND his boyfriend is a Norse geek, but how around has kid Loki gotten? I will finish JIM. SOON.
How is it possible for me to love her so much already?

WHY ARE THE KAPLANS MELTING THEY HAD BETTER NOT BE DEAD is that fruit plastic? OH GOD OH GOD IS IT NEXT MONTH YET?
No, but his mother being...whatever she is, and losing her again, is going to devastate Teddy and thus me by extension. This is going to hurt a lot. I am not prepared. Hold me, tumblr lj.
